Have a 1975 series 3 swb that spent 25 years in the Army. I need to replace the front diff pinion seal, I have had the part from paddocks FRC4586, and it did fit(tight). the one that came out was a leather one encased in metal, which I thought made it a Salisbury diff seal. These are way too big, the the diff does not have the seal retainer shown in my Haynes bible, and looks for all the world like a Salisbury with 10 splines.Looks normal at the front but nothing like what is in the manual at the back.
Also my transfer box output shaft seal is leaking, and nobody seems to know what I am talking about(paddocks)(not having a go) am I the only person who ever had a leaky transfer box output shaft seal?

Many thanks

P.S The rear diff is the same.

When I changed the diff on my Disco I also replaced the same seal .. which also looked totally different. Tok it back to RCV (Local independant) and it appears they changed the profile of the output flange and the mudshield, consequently the seal itself was also different.

Took their advice, slapped it in and job's a god 'un.

.. I know it's not a Series, but it might be worth following this up. Maybe measure the old flange/seal etc and see if it all fits and seals properly.

The Rover seal did look right when it went in very tightly, so must assume its right, my main concern is why dont the back look like it should if the spec was changed i'd expect my good old Haynes to tell me, shall have to read the bit at the back again see if I've missed something.
Thanks everyone so far.

Pete

the seals are a retro fit replacement for the old leather type. i thought there was only one seal for the rover diff so mention that and you should be ok.
are env different perhaps?

never really looked at them ever! perhaps for a torque figure or something. generally their advice is crap. when you want to know how to take something tricky off it just says "remove part" and thats it. like they couldnt do it to show you!

Thanks for that G-Man its a pearl I shall treasure, would sooner have heard something relevant to my question but hey ho you may have made someone laugh!

The question has already been answered for you. It's a rover diff not a salisbury. If you purchased a seal for an axle fitted with a Salisbury diff. Then in all likelyhood you have the wrong part.

the question was already answered i believe! the only thing hadn't been answered is does anyone else have a leaky transfer box output, yes at the rear not so much at the front

Perhaps I am being over sensitive, but it seems if you ask a question you can get a variety of smart backsides wondering why you asked it in the first place!!! If we were all bloody experts then these places would not exist. I ask the question cos I do not know or understand something about a landy, but will not be asking again. Thanks to those who could be bothered to be understanding, we all start at the same point but not all of us turn into smart arses.

What utter bollocks.

You asked what diff it was and were told. You asked why the seal was different and I mentioned how mine was different and Tig9619 also gave a possible answer too ...

What other questions did you specifically ask?

Most of what you wrote were statements not questions, so get off your arse, take the chip off your shoulder and maybe read properly what you actually asked and then READ THE ANSWERS ... they're all there but you, it appears, can't be arsed to either understand or want different answers, so please, what SPECIFIC questions do you have?

If you want to spout ****e again, just feck off.

Pete, this forum is all about having a laugh the questions were answered by a couple of people and a couple of people gave you a mild ribbing this is sort of the polar opposite of the lro forum where you will get people spout off in depth about how the seal slightly changed design back in 1979 due to a slight manufacturing change!

Sorry if you were offended by the lack of information in some of the posts but you gotta relax and take it in your stride.

oh and welcome to the mad house :D
