Discovered that the last service on my 'new' purchase was back in March 2011. So a full service seemed like a good idea. But who to go to? My days of crawling underneath with a spanner are over (I hope). Mind you, that ground clearance on the Disco is awesome.

First up, main dealer. How much for a full service ? "£384 inc VAT. And had the car had its cambelt changed at 100,000 miles?" Aaargh! No idea.

Decide to ring back through the service book starting at the 100k service. Garage gone bust but the dog is still there probably. Ring the 120k service. Small outfit, sounded pretty good but nowhere near to me. Remembered the car. "Very tidy" (that was a relief ...at least it doesn't look as if I've bought a dog :) ) but no cambelt change done. Learnt a bit about the items that they did replace. [Of course, you Disco road warriors are ahead of me at this point and know what the answer is].

Finally ring the main dealer in Scotland (even further away) who did the 130k service. Fully computerised. Told me everything that was done and which bits but no, no cambelt change. But.." she said "...I don't think there is one on that vehicle. I'll check.....no, it's a chain". Yee...har.....sigh of relief.

Workshop manual now downloaded onto my computer.

Service being done by local small outfit with a good rep. £175 + VAT. And they don't use S**tparts either. But looking at that manual....I reckon I might just be getting those spanners out.

And what's all this about the engine being so clean that it doesn't need a catalytic converter. Is that for real? If so, I call that a result. :)

Well you can pay the £300+ for a main dealer service on an old Disco if you like but if it was me i'd do it myself and save £200+

Added bonus would also be not getting laughed at when you walk out of the dealers with your new oil.
