FiL has just acquired a 51 reg Td5 with a bit of an intermittent starting issue... hopefully something easy and cheap to sort!

Sometimes on starting, you can press the accelerator all the way to the floor and the bugger will not rev. Turn her off and give her a minute or so, sometimes she'll do the same and its stop, wait and try again, other times its happy days and away to go.

Had a mate to bung it on his diagnostic thing and nowt of any use was showing up - ie all seemingly fine!

Does anyone have any ideas before the old bugger starts ripping the guts out of what on the face of it seems a tidy old tub with a bit of a 'starting' problem!

Check the high pressure line feeding the engine, it may have a hole in it.

There was a recall on this very issue by Landrover.

I have quoted the text of the recall below:

LAND ROVER announced a problem with the Discovery Series , Diesel TD5 affecting a total of 33,491 vehicles.

Rear fuel line may chafe with ABS/ Water sensor, and fuel pump harnesses with the possibility that a fuel leak may develop Vehicles built from 06/30/2001 to 04/19/2004 are at risk.

The following remedial action is necessary to address this problem. Remove original convolute tubing and replace with smooth PVC tape. Additionally, change fuel line, and re-route the wiring harness to run to the side of the fuel lines.

Vehicles with the following identification numbers are affected:

SALLTGM981A736101 to SALLTGM834A865281

and on top of that make sure you have cleaned and greased the earth connections anorl...

you need to check the live data and make sure it's getting the 5v feed to the throttle pot.

Sorry pressed the wrong button.......if that is the case then the throttle pedal/driver demand is not sending the signal to the engine, just remove the electric connector from the pedal spray with good contact cleaner and just fit and remove it 3/4 times to make a clean good contact. Test and see if all is good. Oh and yes the Td5 does not have a throttle cable its fly by wire.

The diag wasn't yer ebay special - t'was a very pro looking bit of kit called I think autodiagnos??

Liking the sound of the pedal thing rangy35 - nice and cheap place to start afore we go into deep and expensive!

In that case only other thing I've seen then is it might be calibrated for the wrong pedal , from memory some are I think 3 and some 4, not sure if your off tool can do this as I use Bosch kts
Basically I had a defender not revving but recall rated the throttle and has been fine since
Hope this helps

Little update - fuel filter and fuel pump changed.

World of difference - filter was gunged up with years of mank and this in turn had worn the fuel pump so it would starve the engine of fuel despite the pedal to the floor effort - this probably did for the pump as well as the ecu would tell the pump to pump harder!!

Nice one, thanx for the update, just shows again, basics first then the complicated stuff.
