My first post, so bear with me...

I have had this FL2 since new but is has recently started misbehaving, with the EPB intermittently not auto-releasing when going forwards and with no error message displayed and no beeps. I have realised that the problem is happening after leaving the car for some time, e.g. overnight. The problem usually (maybe always - not sure) clears after driving for a while, 10 - 30 minutes.
I am not sure whether or not problem is affecting all wheels.
Releases OK manually and auto-releases in reverse, but sometimes (~50%) momentarily reapplies the brakes when driving away.

Does anyone have any ideas what may be causing this?

Thanks

Sounds like sticking EPB shoes to me. When were the EPB shoes last stripped, cleaned, lubricated and reasonabled?

@Hippo The brakes release manually with the switch, although sometimes brake(s) momentarily reapply when driving away.

@ Nodge68 Not unless part of standard service - I'll need to check.

It should be but has it been done? It's definitely worth getting the EPB shoes checked and serviced correctly, as it's a common problem on them. The compensater does corrode and stick, which causes jamming of the shoes.

Thanks Nodge 68.
I was wondering why, if problem with shoes, it would behave differently between manual and auto-release? Vehicle was serviced at LR main dealership end March. Problem initially started appearing around May.
I need to say that I have now had the problem clear itself after around 1 mile and on another day about 45 minutes of driving.

Did yer solve it?
No, not yet. Been to LR dealer - nothing on computer, recalibrated accelerometers - left it with them but when I returned problem still present. They put brakes into service position and restored but only OK for that day. Went to another LR specialist locally - they also hadn't come across the problem - said they would check around and let me know... nothing yet.
I also haven't managed to get a definitive answer about which gears in a manual gearbox box should work with auto release.

I still think the mechanical components need to be stripped and cleaned and correctly refitted, before investigation of the electronics.

The difference between auto release and releasing manually is simple. When auto-release is used, the brake shoes are under load as engine torque needs to available before the release takes place. This has the effect of making the brakes grab on. When manual release is used, the driver dictates when to release, so engine torque is minimal
This reduces the chance that the brakes grab on.

Yeah - you're probably right. Just recently, it hasn't been such a problem as it has gone to normal behaviour quite soon after first use each day. I'm hoping that it may sort itself out...
The think it find confusing is how random it is:
- One thing that is consistent is that the PB dashboard indication remains on when PB auto-release does not auto-release.
- Randomly, I get the warning of two dings and the message that auto-release is unavailable. When that happens it usually works after disengaging the clutch and reselecting first a second time.
- Randomly, putting into second ger and then into first allows auto-release to work... or maybe it is just co-incidence. I must try just putting into neutral and back into first.
- Random, how long before it starts working correctly
- Random, whether the brakes grab when driving away (but been quite rare recently)
I would still like to know if it is correct that auto-release should only work in first and reverse.

That's correct. Auto release works on first and reverse only.
Does the gear indicator on the show the correct gear all the time?
I'm wondering if the X Y sensor could be iffy?

I don't think I have any gear indicator... at least I've never seen it. Is a manual gearbox supposed to to have this?

Freelander 2 has switches to identify when first and reverse is detected along with a neutral position switch.

It also uses the clutch pedal switches

As Nodge said a full diagnostic is needed including monitoring of live data to work out what is going on

With the engine ont tick over, auto int neutral, put yer foot gently on the brake pedal as if yer holding it stationary on the grand Prix starting grid.

If yer now apply the electric brake, does the brake pedal lower slightly as the electric brake is applied?

Keep yer foot ont brake pedal without releasing. If yer now release the electric brake with the switch, does the brake pedal rise slightly?

Any news on this?
Interesting - I got a notification of your last post but not for the two posts before that, so I didn't check the points in your last but one post. However, I am pretty sure the pedal does move a bit when I set the brake with the switch - however I don't remember ever releasing the brake manually with the footbrake applied.
Anyway, more to the point, following my earlier comment in August:

it carried on improving until, for the last three weeks or so, the problem seems to have disappeared.
