is the fuel pump screaming like a strangled cat ?
sound the same as i had with my 110 td5 it was the injector seals (few pence each ) do that before you do as i did and throw loads of money at it ;)

ye pump is like a strangled cat..it feels like im looseing fuel pressure.was that the same with you and did injector seals sort yours out...and did your fuel pump get less noisy once sorted..thanks for replying.....mark.

put a genuine fuel filter first of all

yes and no :D yes it did get much quieter but only cuz i bought a new 1 before the seals were found as the problem

I had a very very similar problem with my TD5 Defender, it turned out that crap in the fuel tank was building up and causing a blockage of the fuel pump intake filters in the tank.

Drop your tank, empty it then take the pump out. Clean the inside of the tank carefully (I swilled mine with a little petrol then put gave the inside a good rub with a rough rag and swilled it with a little fresh petrol) and check the plastic gauze on the pump is clear. Re-fit everything. My problem had never re-occurred since.

no my td5 has not been put on any diagnostics as no lights have shown on dash..but will be trying that tomoz.as this is doing my head in naw..well before i start throwing money at it..

Take out the pump - clean the nylon mesh screens inside it.

Take off the fuel filter and make SURE there isn't a small O-Ring trapped on the filter head as well as on on the filter can, so that when a filter is fitted there may be TWO small O-rings in place. MAKE SURE. ONE small O-ring is correct.

This problem sounds like a combination of fuel starvation and AIR (or gas) in the system.

Go to the fuel filter - there are FOUR pipes on it.

The REAR OUTER pipe is the AIR BLEED PIPE, and it contains a thin disc filter and a bleed hole to let air out. I bet this is choked.

Examine it carefully and you will see how to clear it. Feel free to poke a wire right though the middle of it.

Then report back.

hi there..as you said about the air bleed valve,i took it of today and and could not blow throuh it at all so cleaned it the best i could and done as you said.my td5 has naw been able to do a 20 mile round trip with out cutting out so far but pump is still scraming every time i turn ignotion on..some members have told me there pumps are noisy but like another member said its screaming..its a new pump...iv had it out twice today and seems fine..any more ideas..also thanks to every one that has given me ideas so far..mark.

There are two probable culprits I think:

1. Usually I would suggest the mesh screens in the pump body may be choked. I have had that and it makes the pump noisy, and then causes big trouble.

It is quite easy to get the pump out - but do it when the fuel level is low.
But you say the pump is new.

2. the fuel filter may be choked and it may have more that one small O-ring trapped on the filter-head. TD5 MUST have free-flowing fuel filter.

The screaming noise is usually NOT the pump, but more often it is noise in the filter head due to air or gas in the fuel.

My TD5 s going through these horrors at this time.

thanks for your thoughts..will be on my disco all day today looking at everything everyone has said on this post of mine..and what ever time i finish it tonight i hope to update this post with good news...thanks everyone...

Hi there once again..sorry its been so long to update this as my internet has been down..just to up date my post for anyone reserching this problem..turned out to be my intercooler pipes..after alot of reserch i was advised to change my intercooler pipes so after i had allready changed most things my last resort was the pipes..changed them and all sorted..drives a1 again well for time being..

Very sorry for delay on this CharlesY as i work away long distance and not had a chance to view or update my posts up untill naw...I didnt state it was the intercooler pipes making my fuel pump noisy..The post i put up was *( my td5 cuts out and is a nightmare to restart)*.REPLYS i recived were all to do with fueling system etc pipes and fuel pump.
So im sorry for any confusion..Was meaning the fault i had with my td5 cutting out under any strain and then being a night mare to restart turned out to be my intercooler pipes breaking down inside so when under any strain the inside of my pipes were collapsing cutting off air feed through the pipes causeing it to cut out..
But also just to finish this off,,Very noisy fuel pump will teach me never to buy a copy part for my td5 again,AS it melted on me a while ago..Bought a genuine fuel pump and no more noise,, *(Just have to naw look at fixing new faults on my td5 naw)*
Very sorry for delay and confusion over this.
