I alredy fitted a 2.5l freight rover engine in my landy, but the timing
belt has snapped Twice now and it leaked oil all over. so am fed up
with that particular engine. so looking for replacement wondering what
will fit? a friend offered me transit engine, read it is good but more
work involved (mountings, exhaust? etc.) found an "F" reg 90 with
knackered body but good engine and box (apparantly) so just looking for
a bit of advice really! Thanks landiemanlll

If the running gear is fine everything else is bolt on... fillerable and
paintable..or sparyable.

Get something reliable, if it looks rough then tart it up, failing that
you'll need to dig in deeper and then never dare use it as nature intended.

Personally I'd fit something simple and easy to get the bits for, so a
standerd diesel then you have more scope when you sell it. Otherwise you
limit your market.

If it's a toy 2nd ot 3rd motor then stick a ruddy great Jag lump in it and
if that fails a V8 ... all ajacent to an auto box of course

is the "90" engine a standard diesel? I totally agree about the rest
being bendable sprayable etc. and somthing reliable would be a dream!!
had nothing but problems with past engines and i use the poor old girl

Dunno, If you mean will it fit the SIII then if it's the 2.5 natually
aspirated non turbo I tend ti believe it's a direct bolt in replacement for
the old 2.25 diesel but please double check. If the 90 is a runner I'd be
more inclined unless your SIII is otherwise mint to go with the 90 though
but it's easy to say. I'm still attached to a IIa that has not moved for
near on 2 years.

well selling her has never been an option anyhow, offroading yes
regulary she just needs reliable heart. it has only been a week since
breakdown but need to make decision soon !

and very, very, very noisy! You can get a 200Tdi Disco for not too
much money now, and probably get half your money back selling
the bits you don't want.

The Freight Rover engine has only a tin cover over the belt and
consequently can fill up with crud if you go off road, is it this which is
breaking the belts or something else or does the front seal need replacing?
I've changed the belt on a couple of these back to a timing chain setup
just for offroad use (the machining for the chain tensioner etc was present
on the front of the block) and used the chainwheels, timing cover, tensioner
bits and injector pump off old knackered 2 1/4 diesel engines and they ran
for ages like that with no alteration to fuel delivery etc.(it's an option
if the 2.5 is ok otherwise).

and it leaked oil all over.

They all do that Sir.

I think you're better off with a standard 2286cc diesel, (they *are*
reliable and good starters), or fitting a 200 Tdi from a rusty Disco seeing
as you must have already cut out the battery carrier, it will (almost) go
straight in.

wouldn't putting 21/4 be going backwards slightly have got used to a
bit more speed an mpg
like i said b4 evryday use, motorways to the shows and offroading and
journey's to wales, france or whichever way the wind is blowing at time!

It's pretty much a straight-in job - the 200Tdi has essentialy the same
block as the 2.5D. You don't need to worry about the glow plugs as
200Tdi doesn't really need them, and you should have
some sort of spill return already with it being a diesel. You'll
need to make/have made a new down pipe. Make sure you get all the
plumbing with it (if not buying a whole vehicle). It has to be
a Discovery engine BTW, as the turbo sticks up too much on the
Defender version. There's bound to be other little things, but
nothing that can't be sorted out relatively easily.

the 2.5 n/a 90 engine is virtually identical to the freight rover 2.5
that you have now. The only real difference is the timing belt
casing/assembly/fuel distributer along with little things like the
starter and the number of teeth on the flywheel.
I have the sherpa 2.5 in mine and when i rebuilt it half of the
internals (like the crankshaft) actually say landrover on!

Since i rebuilt my engine it doesnt leak either!
