My Series 2a Restoration (Attempt!)

Look like a worthwhile project.
Welcome to the forum mate.
You can get the square type rear xmember if you really wanted to make it original.
There are plenty of suppliers for stuff you need, just ask.
They look like ex mil towing eyes at the front, not sure but I think the trim piece between the reg plate and the grille is series 3.

Neither have I come to think of it.
If the chassis has been fixed proper then leave it you have enough to do.
If your keeping the bus original then you wont be converting to diesel then.
If your using paddocks then watch out for britpart spares, they do not have a good reputation with some of us.

Looks good, mate. :)

With regard to its age - the chassis number is a good place to start. If you contact Gaydon (Land Rover archives) for a fiver they'll tell you the build date. Unless someone has been mucking about with the front of it, it's most certainly earlier than it's registration year as the lights went into the wings in 1969.

Ian.

Nice looking project - good to see you're trying to keep it original.

A few hints about Landyzone....
There is a great deal of friendly banter - even if it gets a bit heated sometimes.
It's useful to put a location in your header.
There are some very knowledgable people here, but always get at least two opinions!
The "anything goes" section - does what it says on the tin and you never know what you'll find.....
Don't mention Freelanders - it only upsets some of the older members.
Please search before asking questions - you will get flamed for asking what the largest size tyres you can fit and other frequently asked/silly queries.

Looking forward to seeing some progress.

Hi mate, thanks very much.

Cheers for the tips, I’ve added my location now :) I’m no stranger to owners club forums anyway, as my other car is a Subaru Impreza (flame suit on lol). What can I say, I love 4 wheel drive :D

I’ve been lurking on here for quite a while (I came across the site when looking for help for problems on my Dad’s old Disco TD5) and there is quite a wealth of knowledge throughout the membership, which is great to see.

Thanks again. I hope to update the thread very soon!

PS. Not a fan of Freelanders either, especially the soon to be released 2-wheel-drive disaster.

Hmm - my wife's car is an impreza. Could there be a pattern here....

The heritage certificate is a "nice to have" - but it's a lot of money for a bit of printed paper, and the build records for Land Rovers don't have a lot of information on them so the certificate has a lot of blank fields. You could always pop along to Gaydon in person and look up your vehicle.

Ian

welcome to LZ
looks like you got a bargain, keep us updated with progress and nice big pics

re your tank

when i got my series 3 the prev owner had it switched to passenger side fuel tank as his "preference", when i filled up the reason was evident (hole in seam with fuel ****ing out)

new drivers side tank was got so could fill up from outside bit more complicated on the diesel with the fuel spill return pipe

Got yerself a nice little build there, fella - LOVING the socket/wrench find :D

Nothing like joining a forum and getting down to business - Kudos.

One thing I will say about that welding.....see that section on the L/h side of the pic, by the spring hanger that looks like snot ?
If you have time and a grinder, i'd suggest grinding that ****e back to see if it's penetrated the parent metal. Most of that looks like "filler" welding - basically there's a gap, and the person just creamed weldwire into it.....

Yep - I'd second RR's comments. No point in getting this far and not making sure any welding is good. Won't take long to check it's a decent weld under there (although it's certainly not the prettiest!)

Loving the pictures though - hopefully we'll be able to keep each other motivated as I've started a restoration of a 1969 S2A (there's a thread on here somewhere).
