Well it's finally here, my new (1996) HSE having arrived on the South Atlantic Resupply Ship (I'm in the Falklands). The battery was dead when it came off the boat and after jumping it the suspension is on the stops with the top 3 height lights on the dash on. I believe it's a soft fault at this stage as there is no "EAS Fault" on the dash just the "Slow Max 35MPH" message. I intend this lunch time (5 hrs behind the UK) to jump the relay and activate the compressor to see it the bags rise, which if they do will give me an indication of leaks etc. I'll let you all know how I get on.

Also I want to change the tryres but several of the wheel studs are rounded and I just can't get them off. I'm going to get it to the workshops for help, but wondered if anyone has a full set of studs for sale? Once I get a new set then I shall get the old ones removed and replaced with the new.

Your description implies a hard fault, not a soft fault. A Soft Fault just reports EAS fault and the suspension rises to the top of it's setting. The 35mph max message is because it's hard faulted and dropped to the bump stops. Either way, the EAS needs to be unlocked/reset before it will start operating properly again.

I think you may need one of the eas leads from ebay and download the free software to see what's wrong with it - it's quite likely the flat battery has caused it. I've heard of various methods involving shorting out pins on the EAS ECU to reset it, but I've not tried them. Bought myself a kicker now.

Have a look at Rangerovers.net. They've got a very useful and informative section on EAS faults and workarounds.

Thanks Guy, I shall get a cable and the software. I'm going to try the relay jump as detailed on Rangerovernet, just to try and at least put some air in the system to check for leaks. I'll keep you posted.

:welcome2:

Regarding the wheel nuts, you should be able to get them off Ebay also. Strange that they are rounded off as they are pretty sturdy..do you think they were "Attacked" on the way over????. Probably, one of each wheel has a locking nut with a dummy cap which pulls off, do you have a key??
Due to the remoteness of your location, perhaps it may be worth while having a look on Blackbox Solutions Ltd - Designers and manufacturers of the best vehicle diagnostic tools. at their range of diagnostic systems as a future possibility.

Good luck with your car and just shout if you need help or advice.

:tea::smokin:

Thank you Irish, I'm thinking about my options from a lead and software to an EAS Kicker from Blackbox Solns, is it better to get the Kicker and be sure it works do you think?

Well I'm back from lunch and having jumped pins 3&5 on relay 20, the compressor runs as it should. Can I get it to inflate the bags without clearing the fault?

Thank you again for your help and advice.

Chris

Oh and the wheel nuts issue I will look again at tonight, weather permitting of course as we have a foot of snow on the ground at the mo with regular blizzard showers, mmmmm BBQ anyone!

Firstly, you should be able to fill the springs by jumpering pins on the EAS connector....see Rangerovers.net for details.
Make sure you have RAVE..even more essential down there!!!
Have a good look through the blackbox site. They do a single vehicle package with all the diagnostic modules except the Becm CPU module, ok it's locked to your car but could be a good selling tool if you decide to sell the car.
Feedback on here is pretty positive for the EAS software but it's not as comprehensive as the Rovacom module.

I must say that I'm swayed toward a Rovacom or similar, as I would be able to deal with other faults such as HEVAC and the like. I'll have another look at Blackbox's web site, at least I should get whatever I order tax free. I'll keep you posted.

I have to say, I agree with Irish. Get yourself a an Extreme. It fits neatly in the glovebox and you dont need to carry a laptop to read and clear any faults. Obviously if you can still use it with a laptop to get full functionality. It is an awsome bit of kit. I ve had mine a year and I am still finding things it can do.

Oh and if you bump into a gawky looking private called Hamish, say Hi from Dans Dad.

Not many people agree with me!!!!:mooning:
Get your battery on charge..you can leave it on the car. Spend an hour or so downloading RAVE, it will be indispensable.
I have the now obsolete Rovacomlite server, which is superb and has given me years of excellent service and their support forum is first class. If my unit dies, I would get the Extreme.
If you want any info. on the system and it's capabilities, send me a PM.
Sounds like your version of the weather, apart from it being white is similar to Ireland..ours is wet instead.

I'm on the Blackbox site now looking, but there are so many and I'm not sure which one I need. I notice that there is a 20% off discount at the mo as well.

Forgot about the discount!!!
If you have a laptop, then the Faultmate is ideal unless you can see yourself needing it out in the sticks. In any case if you take the laptop with you the problem is solved. You then have to decide which version you want, Single Vehicle, which is tied to your car and cannot be used on another (Cheaper) or Multi vehicle which can be used on any car (More expensive). You buy the hardware initially, and individual software packages as you need them. The server is preloaded with the software and you pay your money and they mail you the unlock code for each package. If you are in a rush..you can do it over the phone during working hours.
I would consider the basic software for starters to be SM 022 BECM, SM 026 Suspension and SM 027 Valeo HEVAC. From experience I have found those to be the one's I use most.
Obviously you will need the OBD interface lead which is suitable for the above modules and also a Null Modem lead which is easily available off Ebay and cheaper..I have a 3metre one. If your laptop does not have a serial port a serial to USB adaptor is required, also cheaper from Ebay.
Depending on the Faultmate version, you may or may not require the Vehicle Interface.
Hope this gives you something to go at. At the end of the day, it depends on how much you want to spend.

Thank you again Irish. I have just had a light bulb moment! I'm going to try and contact the other 3 or 4 P38 owners in the Islands and see whether they want to chip in to get the full multivehicle Extreme. Then again maybe one of them already has one :D.

I shall have a ponder about which to go for, in the meantime though I shall jump the pins to get some air in the springs, hey I'm a poet and I had no idea!

I'll get my coat!

Well wouldn't you believe it!!

I went out tonight to jump the eas pins to put some air in the springs. I put the seat back and took the trim off to get to the box, when I found the delay relay laying on the floor:eek::eek::eek:

I plugged it back in, the 35 mph message went out and the springs went up and down on command.

Is this the easiest fix yet on the Range Rover forum????

Don't tell wrxfifer,I may get lynched.

its a sign that something is amiss!!! why would it be there unless someone packed it and didnt want it to raise during loading/offloading

I see your point Gav, I shall keep an eye on it. I think I shall still buy an extreme for that warm feeling that I can solve any further problems myself (being this far from civilisation).
