My landy 90 reving its nuts off!

hi everyone. hope you can help me think someone else on this site had this problem.. on my way home on new years eve my landy starting going to full revs clouds of white smoke and when i taken the key out still going at it for a couple of minits...when we got it home next day i started it and it was running ok its a landrover 90 TD standed think it might be turbo but has anyone got one going cheap as poss and anythink on how to get the job done ....

have you topped up / changed your oil recently or adjusted your idle speed?

when you took the key out and it was still runnin you should have stalled it

Your engine was running on it's own oil. It could be knackered turbo seals, it could be oil level too high. Turbo is the most likely though. Check your oil level and check the play in the turbo.

it needed some oil this week i check it each week and was surprised when the oil light flickerd.. and been a bit more smoky than the norm

Looking like turbo then Tom.... told you to buy a V8.....

I'l go with red turbo gone, take the pipe to the engine off and see if it is full of oil.

Remember it will have pumped it into the exhaust aswel

in the process of convertin my 90 TD to a 200tdi so hav a TD engine if your interested?

i was going to put in a TDI but cash tight at moment just need a turbo too keep it going untill i can sort out a good engine for it and thanks LANDYOWNER for getting us home..

Oil is getting into the engine from the sump

DO NOT START IT UNTIL YOU HAVE FOUND OUT WHY - it will use up the oil, and if that happens at full rev it will blow up. Turning off the fuel supply will not help stop it as it is no longer running on diesel!

The main causes of this are:

1) as has already been said - The Turbo Seals - Usualy cause on this - oil from the sump is pumped into the turbo to lubricate it - if the seal goes then this oil is sprayed into the incomming air stream

2) being slightly overfull will not cause this, but a huge amount over may cause oil to bypass the rings but if its reving away this is unlikely

3) A blown cylinder head is also another way of oil entering the cylinders, again this is unlikely as it would need to affect more than one (three to be honest) for it to have a major affect

4) Oil could also be entering the system via the top breather pipe - connecting the oil filler to the air filter housing - this is to remove fumes from the sump and stop them entering the cab. - Remove it from the air filter box and leave it loose - it just causes probelms. If this is the problem then the air filter will be covered in oil as well

I would start with the turbo - take the pipe off between the turbo and the inlet manifold - it there is oil in the pipe then that the probelm - either get the seals replaced or a new turbo (£400 new)

I knew that old 90 would end up on a trailer behind the V8 sooner or later, the old 110 enjoyed the trip out.
Hope you get sorted with a turbo soon mate..

will check that pipe for oil .. the engine was running ok when we got it back but only had it running for 5mins tho

same happened to my 19j im surprised if you let the engine run well the key was out that it didnt oblitarate itself. i bet it was getting faster and faster . i bet the air filter got a litre of oil in the bottom mine did. there is videos on you tube of desiels running away.. time to get rid new turbo 400£ aint it.. put a 200 in

this happened to a van i had , filled the road with white smoke reved its head off sounded like a F1 car lol same as you turned it off but it kept going , my first thought was turbo but then i thought if it was the turbo and the engine was running on oil then it should be black smoke ? , further investagation showed it was the fuel pump had sent an over dose of derv into the engine and thats why it reved up and put out white smoke , put a fuel pump on and away she went , sold her soon after as i was afraid of the engine getting such a reving

that was the same thing as mine mate started it up next day all fine .so going to check out all the turbo and pipes first then will look at pump..thanks

HI everyone . thanks for the advice.. spent all yesterday getting turbo of was well knackerd turbo very lose inside.. froze my nuts of as well.. but its getting there.. looking forward to rip up some of that snow...

Had this happen on a Montego Turbo Diesel many years back. Diesel was getting into the sump somehow and when the level rose to probably breather level it sucked up into turbo and straight out thru exhaust, running engine at full revs until it ran out of 'mixture'. What a mess!

If this happens the only way to save your engine is to put it into 5th gear, put the foot break on hard, and stall it with the clutch.................................... (may make a bit of a burning smell from the clutch - but should save the engine) - obviously turn off the ignition first
