hi guys newbie here, im in need o some pro advice, so ill start at the begining.
my father in law is selling his 3.5v8i disco and ive got first refusal, so heres some facts,
its got a lpg conversion 2 tanks under the sills, its had a 2in lift, new manifold and brakes diff lock works fine, now some bad bits
there is some rust bubbes on door bottoms and a small patch on the top of rear drivers side wheel arch where door closes on to, the fag lighter and clock dont work and wen heaters are on the fan makes a whinning noise every so often and rear sunroof leaks a bit,he said i can have for £1250 so ill get to the point.
Is this a bargain and will the slight faults have major underlying probs, i want to use it as a work horse and is the 3.5v8i any good for offroading at weekends
any response would be great sorry for long post cheers

Hi Ozzie, that sounds like a LOT of money to me. You don't say what year/what mileage but I assuming it's quite an early DI, may '92?

Too much money imo, needs to be half that !!!

i got mine for £580, not as good condition as that though but even a mint one wont fetch over 800-900 for a 3.5 v8

and yes they are good offroad
and yes it is going to rust

thanks for response guys its got 136,000 on the clock and it is a 92 5 door. so to much in your eyes thanks for the heads up might look into others then as he doesnt want to go lower than 1200 reckons he can easily get 1500, ill have to point him in the direction o this site lol, are parts cheapish for discos

i thinks hes dreaming a tad:p

parts for disco 1 are very cheap, or can easily be upgraded

if he thinks hes getting over a grand, i want whatever hes smoking

what sort o upgrades are available, even just a short list, thanks for your help

if you can think of a part there is probably an after market part to replace it

bumpers, wheels, under body protection, drive train, locking diffs, air filters, exhausts, tank guards, lights, bushes, suspension, brakes, tree sliders, winches, roof racks, engine conponents, prop shafts, half shafts, radius arms, trailing arms, steering damper, diff guards, roll cage steering wheel, raised air intake, brake lines, spare wheel carrier, light guards, wheel arch extensions, transmission brake conversion.....etc

you can spend an unlimited amount of cash on parts

so where would you place this 1 in the price range we discussed previously, sorry for being apain this will be my first ever landy, im always under the bonnet of cars so not scared to get my hands dirty, how ard is water pump to do on V8 thanks

Why not put a bit more money up and look for an early Disco 2? Body corrosion is not an issue, larger rear body, no swivel joints to leak oil, easier in my view to work on, less chance of buying a total wreck that has been bodged (repaired) by an ebay seller.

Yes, you'll spend more money up front, but you're going to spend it out on a Disco 1 anyway, eventually.

Ours was built November 1998, registered June 1999. NO rust anywhere, we just had the sunroofs out to seal them, the floor was running with water in the back, but no rust at all. It has taken the rear carpet two and a half weeks to drip dry in the workshop.

Mechanical problems you can get around, rusty lumps are another thing all together.

An early Disco 2 with an engine problem could be a good buy.

na sort of getting tht on ebay lol, total change of direction, are the 1997 2.5tdi any good offroading and wats 1 worth as im watcing 3 on ebay, thanks for all your elp guys

dezul will be better for the wet stuff when offroading. The 2.5 tdi in a disco will be a 200 tdi injun or a 300tdi injun, there are various opions on which is best, ive had 200 tdi in a defender and 300 in me old mans disco both seemed good to me.
