My first Defender

Hello guys, I am new to forums and have read threads for a little while and thought I would join LandyZone as I have read loads of useful information and now I think I ought to contribute.

I have always wanted a Landy then took the plunge at the beginning of the year and bought a black 110 defender. I absolutely love it along with some of its leaks! I have started doing some modifications to it but keen not to over do it so will post some pics of Black Thunder shortly!

So far I have added some Masia Panoramic windows to the rear windows and rear quarters which wasn't as bad a job as I imagined. I added a Tinted rear heated screen and tinted rear passenger windows. I have changed the air intakes and side grille and replaced them with KBX aftermarket parts in Matt black. New wiper arms and replaced the rubber seals on the Alpine windows as they were very dry and cracked and were letting in water.

My projects for next year finances permitting will include putting in a larger intercooler and getting the engine remapped but primarily looking at replacing my alloys so will keep my eye on the classifieds. If I sell a kidney then maybe a spare wheel carrier and NAS step.

Side profile with added rear passenger tinted Masai windows

As part of the improvements/mods to my Landy I'm thinking of either having my engine remapped or having it chipped. It's a 2.5 TD5 engine. Has anyone had either of these done to their own or know which one is better?
I am going through the current threads on the benefits of engine remapping but if anyone has had it done recently it would be great to get their opinion.

Hello there and welcome,I had a 2006 defender 90,changed out the exhaust,got rid of the egr valve,alisport inter cooler,silicone hoses,turned the boost up a little and a power remap,speak to Gary at td5 alive he will keep you right and the is a really nice bloke to deal with,the difference is hard to believe and it sounded like thunder

Hi there, with all the recent bad weather I have noticed that the mat and carpet out of the boot is soaking wet.
It can't be the Alpine windows as I had these re-sealed as the rubber had dried and cracked with age.
My other thought was maybe a load of condensation has collected and run down to the floor? But it is lot so not sure if it's possible.
Suggestions gratefully received.

It's a defender it'll leak no matter what but check the rear door and line the roof properly

What would you recommend to line the roof?

I used camping mat material, waterproof and decent sound deadening, but I found it hard to get a glue that will put up with heat. I've got a black roof so absorbs heat really badly

That's not a bad suggestion. I was thinking of painting the inside of the roof with Acrypol to provide a seal then putting on some type of lining. Would I be be wasting my money if I used some thing like Dynamat to line the roof? It's quite an expensive way of doing doing it though. :mil40:

Tbh I've never heard of using acrypol as a seal, might be beneficial. I've always used either silicone sealant or seam sealer. Silicone is good but needs perfect conditions to set properly and it smells like ****e+vinegar
Dynamat is quite a common way of soundproofing but is, as you say, quite pricey.
If you do get some camping mat material get some 'Closed cell foam' Open cell absorbs water apparently. It's very cheap compared to dynamat, but probably not as effective.

Cheers, Its really useful to see what it looks like. I might paint it with Acrypol as an experiment and see how it goes. I'll take pictures of my progress and post them here. Although not having a garage, I think I might wait till March before I start that project! It's a wee bit cold at the moment! I'll also look to put up some insulation/soundproofing aswell. Dynamat from what I can see seems to be the most popular stuff on the market.

Sounds good, keep us posted, I'm sure there will be many to help you if you ever get stuck

i've just stuck camping mat in the back of mine this morning.I used spray glue from halfords that i borrowed from my bro-in-law. it works up to 50 degrees C i think
which might not be enough.
it makes no difference to sound proofing as most of the noise is from the front. as for heat insulation i will let you know when its cold.
its not that tough so may need something on top of it

it cost £10 to do the sides as i already have roof lining. but i think it would cost another £15 to do the roof as well.
i will post some pics when its light tomorrow.

I used very similar stuff, it was fine until we had that heatwave back in the summer, because I have a black roof it heated up very quickly and started to sag. I ended up just putting three strips of thin mahogany across to hold it up until I get a LaSalle headlining
