hello, I recently bought a car in south korea and I'm so stressed out.

current driving distance is 130,000 km

1. During cold start, it sounds similar to tappet noise.

2. If drive for about 20 minutes, the sound becomes quiet.

3. It sounds like it's coming from the top of the engine or it's like it's coming from oil pan

4. There is no sound when you step on the accelerator. It only makes sound during a stop.

5. I contacted the former car owners and asked them, and they said they heard this sound 7~8 years ago.

6. This car had engine overhaul 4~5 years ago.

[I've done this repair]

1. exhaust manifold gasket + bold (There was no crack, so I only replaced the gasket and bolt)
2. exhaust catalyst
3. engine + trans mission mount
4. high viscosity engine oil, LIQUI MOLY valve lifter additive

If anyone has resolved this noise, please help...

thank you..

Does it have hydraulic lifters? I think it is without finding very clear info on this, If so this is quite common and nothing much to worry about,
If so, you need to isolate which one it is and change it or maybe service it if you can. (Use a stethoscope or put the end of a long screwdriver onto the valve cover and move it along while having the other end to an ear, You should be able to tell a bit more accurately which one it is. )
Sticking valves are a known fault on these and are a more serious problem but these manifest themselves by misfiring.
Allegedly you can get oil additives which can reduce sticking lifter problems, and also don't use too think an oil, to help with avoiding sticking valves.

I have now listened to your vid and it does sound like more than a sticky lifter, maybe a cam lobe is worn?

The fact it goes quiet after 20 mins driving does imply sticky lifter though.

To diagnose a worn cam lobe, if it isn't visually obvious, then you'll need a dial test indicator and patience to measure the lift each cam lobe gives and see if one is well below the others.

Does it have hydraulic lifters?

Yes it does :)

2. If drive for about 20 minutes, the sound becomes quiet.

Still there but quiet, or gone?

4. high viscosity engine oil,
What spec? why not replace with what should go in?

Why was the engine rebuilt? and was the noise there after that or has it just reappeared?

My little "mudball" has more klms on it and is still original engine (as far as I know) But has had a bit of TLC, it dont tap like that.

That seems a pretty extreme rattle to me all the same. Does yours rattle like that?

the engine is a T16, The Rover T16 engine, a development of the M16, was used in a variety of Rover vehicles, including the Rover 820, 200/400/600 series, and 800 series, as well as limited-run models like the 220/420 GTi and GSi trims. It was also a popular choice for engine conversions into other Rover-MG vehicles, particularly the MG ZR and MG ZS.

is this the correct engine

We had a Rover 420 with one in, one of the very few they made with "fly-by-wire" in. Fast as flip and economical too. I loved it, then we gave it to our son in law and he loved it too, until some A hole rear ended his trailer and destroyed the rear of his car. Just after he had fitted an new turbo.

One morning I dropped the wife off at the coach station she was going to London for work, as she got out of the car I noticed she didn't have her specs on. It wasn't long before the coach was due.
I told her I'd go and get them for her. Peeps around just laughed saying , you'll never make it! Coach station is about 10 miles from our place. Shot off, went like stink, got the specs, back to the coach stop. She was still there and the coach wasn't, quite. No one could believe how fast that car went! 🤣🤣🤣

Thanks Stanley, just found it in my manuals, so yes , as for the problem as you say sounds like a hydrualic lifter gone best to fit a full set if you can get them at a resonable price

Rimmer sell these OEM

Yes.
That’s why I posted what I did.

My 3.5 RR had a similar sound at 100K miles which was instantly diagnosed as a worn camshaft by the LR dealer which was replaced by them.
Maybe it would be worthwhile if it is a cam issue to replace both, which I believe you engine has two.
Wonder how easy it is to get this stuff in South Korea.

Postage and customs aside, why not?

My experience of South Korea was great, lovely peeps.

Not knocking South Korea in the slightest.

Just that postage and customs can really take the pea.
I was quoted £1.65 for a bolt that keeps the oil pump on and £20 odd for postage from the UK to France.
So from the UK to SK may well be an absolute fortune.

Untill the OP comes back and answers some questions.
We are just guessing.
If a new cam was needed then he could probably get it redone there, they have great engineering capabilities there.

Well I think we have given him some good ideas of where to go with it.

3.5 engines were renowned for getting through cam shafts. No idea why though.
