Hi,

I'm new to this site, but I thought I would share with you all my Land Rover Discovery Restoration piccies.

In April this year it failed it's MOT :(, not suprising really as it was a bit of rust box, it failed on: Excessive rust on the chassis (three places), Rear offside seat belt anchor point excessive corrosion (wheel arch etc.), excessive rust near the brake servo and front wheel arches, battery box corroded (actually it had completely gone), brake pipes not securely fastened & brake inbalance. well........ that's pretty bad, so I instead of patching it up and chasing rust for ever and a day I decided to restore my beloved Landy, I took it off road (SORN) and embarked on an empic journey and being a relative novice to car restoration it took a while (8 months). I have attached some piccies of the initial stages for your perusal and enjoyment.

Whilst I was taking everything apart, I decided to get rid of the Viscous fan and air filter and put a K&N air filter (very shiny) with a 45deg chrome elbow joint with silicon pipes etc.

The fans I installed where from the front end I got from another Land Rover (air conditioning fans), it was fun to have half a Land Rover sticking out the back of 1950's Morris Traveller at 60mph taking it back from the scrap yard!

Anyway, it's gone for an MOT , I should find out later today if it's passed or not .

I'll post some piccies of what it looks like now, I think you will all be impressed (well I am anyway).

I'm from Shropshire and took it into Lea Brothers in Edgmond, where you out cleaning yours this morning?

Yeah totally, anyway, the car failed it's MOT on:
1) One water jet pressure was low, so blocked somewhere.
2) Headlamp needs adjusting.
3) Clamp on the exhaust to manifold needs tightening (venting gas etc.)
4) Brake Imbalance (but that's crap on the wheel disc's from waxoiling etc.)

Cautions (not a failure)
1) Rear tyres slightly worn.
2) rear suspension arm ball joint, a little bit of play.
3) a little rust on the rear cross member.

so not too bad.

Anyway, where is there a good place in Shropshire to take my landy offroad? is that place near buildwas still open just for half a day?

I think Buildwas is just open the first sunday of the month, there isnt one in January tho. I much prefer Silverdale in Stoke or if you dont mind the drive Bala in Wales. Buildwas does tend to attract the kind of people that turn up in blatently stolen vitaras and pajeros and rag them around till they blow up.

i took my truck in yesterday for new belts and to put my new HT leads on as i didnt have the time, because of offroading yesterday i think some crap got on the points so it wasnt running on all cylinders, went to see how they were getting on today and the belts and leads are on but its now running on about 4 cylinders and doesnt even have the power to move itself !!!!

hi,

my disco has just failed its mot on excessive body work corrosion issues and im looking into the viability of re-build or fixing like yourself, im a novice when it comes to cars and restoration (tho i know some mechanics, which i will probably be calling on a lot!) but i was wondering (might be a bit cheeky) on what the financial scale of the project was, as don't want to start to find out its more money than i have to finish the job.
And also how hard was the job at hand? I've always wanted to do something like this but to people who don't know about it its very intimidating.

It's impossible to say how much it would cost without knowing exactly what needs doing but for my MOT I bought:
Boot floor £60.00
Z bars (off Ebay) £45.00
Floor supports (off Ebay) £30.00
Sheet steel £16.00 (made inner wing patches, sill patches, drivers footwell etc)
O/S rear wheel arch £24.00
Seam sealant, underseal etc about £30.00
I had also bought an angle grinder, lots of discs!, a MIG welder, rented gas in anticipation of the work required.
It took me a good few weeks to sort out the sills inner wings, drivers footwell etc, as I could only work on it a few hours a night. The boot floor took a weekend to fit.
Have a look at YRM Metal Solutions website, or Ebay, for replacement panel prices and decide if you can afford to sort it out.
