Mud tyres in the snow question??

Afternoon, a quick question.

What are very aggressive mud tyres 80-20 Type tyres like in the snow?

Okay .. sounds consistent with what I've Heard

Mud tyres tend to be excellent in deep snow, but mediocre on packed snow.
So good on fresh, deep, off road snow, but less impressive on snow covered roads where A/Ts or proper snow tyres are much better.

What sort of snow and what sort and size of tyres?

In the UK we generally do not get packed snow, nor does it last very long. 24-48hrs at most and usually a lot less. So we tend to only drive in fresh snow, slush and very occasionally icy packed snow. If you are going elsewhere in the world with different snow, then the answer will be different.

In short, "most" MT's work quite well in the UK in the snow we get. Narrow vs fat will generally perform better. And those with sipes will be better on the icy sections. Compound can also play a part in how well they may do. But by and large, any MT should give you enough grip and traction to get about with a 4x4 in snowy conditions.

On road, I completely agree.

I spent a brilliant couple of hours three or four years ago 'boldly going' where no car had gone before through drifts along local lanes in my D1 with Insa Turbo Risca mud tyres on all corners. Some drifts were as high as the top of the bonnet and took several tries to smash through.

Here in the Colorado Rockies MT's generally suck for paved roads in the winter. They tend to act like hockey pucks.

Ah, but you get PROPER winter over there. We come to a grinding halt when you can't see black tarmac right across the width of the road...
A couple of Polish colleagues took the p*ss the first winter they were here because i didn't swap my tyres for winter tyres. I told them there was no need because most years it just means the rain gets a bit colder while back in Poland they have about 14 inches in places.
