Measure the distance (off the odometer) and measure how much fuel you put in at the fuel station.
Rather inconveniently, we buy fuel in Ls, but use it in Gs, 1G=4.546L, so if you want your mpg, go fill your vehicle up, and take a note of the odometer reading. Drive, fill it up again, then work out the distance. The fuel youve used is the amount youve just put in. Divide by 4.546 to get it in gallons. Then divide the miles driven by gallons used for MPG

Who are you trying to teach how to suck eggs...where is your formula for a knackered series engine with a worn carb badly adjusted and a whiff of fuel from corroded fuel pipes...

On a series? Yea, that’s going to be accurate :D:D:D

What sort of MPG do people get from their series?

My stats from fuelly, enter mileage/liters and price every time I fuel up. I cannot work out how to share a link for the full fuelly stats, but this is a screen grab of them. '82 swb 2.25 diesel running 7.50 tyres with an over drive. Ignore the city/highway, most of the mileage is around country roads, rarely goes on the motorway or the city!

You haven't considered how long it's left standing on the driveway leaking fuel between journeys.

Or how much leaks out of the filler hose onto the driver seat when filling up.

No, fuel leaks werent considered, you got me there.
Alright. Im gonna put it to you guys. Lets say a max budget, MAX of £7500, for something to do weekend laning, and a long trip to africa. A 109 Series or a discovery 1. Now 7.5k on a series, might get something reliable, with a set of parabolic springs. Camping arrangement will be a ground tent and a sleeping bag. 7.5k on a disco will get more mods than it needs, a dual battery setup, solar, roof tent, ect ect, or a similar arrangement to a series, with a nice chunk of change.
Before you ask, funding for the trip will come partially from me, but also from mates who come with, so the costs are significantly less when shared between 4.

Have you thought about the distance between UK and Africa and how long it takes to get to a point of leaving Europe for Africa...I've driven twice from Edinburgh to the Algarve first time in a 110 fitted with a 3ltr Nissan towing a caravan superb smooth and economical (did have 200l of reclaimed red diesel from an old heating tank that was lying around at work lol) second time a RRC and that was to stay here...the 110 with Nissan was quick the RRC 3.5 efi auto also quick and smooth would never want to do it in a 109 ever! and yes I have owned one to tow a catering trailer...still want to take the 101 to Morocco but cant take enough time off to get there at the mo as it's too slow and to be honest very tiring to drive especialy in the heat as your basicly sitting beside the V8 which is hot!...been twice in the van dropped partner at work at 8.30 a nice drive to Tarrifa, ferry to Tangier in the Medina by 3.30 and partner not even picked up by taxi after work!...also getting parts in EU now if you break something is not easy due to paperwork...you'll need a well sorted Landy and a huge wedge of cash to do the trip your planing...

Yes, Im aware of the distance, the Wales to Gibraltar journey is the main reason I havnt set foot abroad yet. Its 1000s of miles of relatively boring roads. Im sure france and spain are amazing places, but Im after more of an adventure, than a holiday, if that makes sense. And I want to see some wild animals, before there arent really any left. (Yeah, little guy, big dreams etc etc)
Thats another reason why the MPG is a big factor, because its a big fuel bill. Not sure how expensive fuel is in africa (I know what google says they are, but no idea if thats accurate?)
Also, very keen to hear more about trailers, and the complexity of taking them across borders (carnets, T.I.P.s etc)

Why the feck are you thinking of going to Gibraltar!! you wont get to Africa from there...how long are you thinking of spending in Africa 6-9 months as it will take that amount of time to get there driving a 109 down to the Safari Parks and back to the UK...many people do the tour down then stick vehicle in a container, ship it back while they fly home from SA...

Shipping it? That sounds REALLY expensive, although I dont know. There are only 2 ways to drive there, one getting a ferry from spain, the other by going around the med and going through quite a few places that one probably shouldnt go, certainly these days.

How much do you think it costs in time and money to drive from South Africa back to the UK?...and Gibralter is not Spain and nowhere near the North Africa crossing ports,Tarrifa crossing would be in terms of time the shortest part of a long long slog in a 109 to get to Africa a mere 60mins just enough time for a couple of beers...

Okay, to get to the southern tip of spain from me is going to be the best part of a week in any landy, so we'll call it a week. Now, I THINK (I dont know, newbie idiot!) That most of what I want to see/experience is in sputhern africa (botswana, zimbabwe, zambia, SA, lesotho, angola? Etc,) so if I spent a month there, maybe two, and then 1.5 weeks to travel through northern africa each way, so lets say 8-12 weeks? I doubt it will be my last trip (certainly hope not!)
Another option Ive heard of, but not looked into, is the santander ferry, which goes to spain in about as long as it would take to drive, iirc.
Okay, lets just rule out some things, I cant drive through the middle east, correct? And even if I could, it would be unwise to go to certain bits of eastern europe, currently. So that means the only way to drive is via the ferry from spain to morocco

F.uck me your geography is non existant stay in Wales and try a few attempts to cross the border into England then maybe a ferry to Eire and see how you get on...also I could organise your whole trip just turn up at Tarrifa all paperwork will be done and escort you through on too ferry all 4 of you....250€ each...

Hmm, I did get an A in GCSE geography....
But Ill admit, I dont have a world map in my head, but google does!
So, lets see, the eastern route, lets call it the suez route (for obvious reasons) goes france, bla bla bla turkey, syria, israel, egypt, sudan, south sudan or ethiopia, lovely. Thats 3 different wars?
The western route, goes france, spain, morocco, and then theres a bunch of different ways.
Where is my geography wrong? (Other than forgetting namibia!) Should I spend more time further north, in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Congo etc?
Please do tell me HOW/WHERE Im wrong, not just that Im wrong.
Also, trip will be well over a year from now, so Ill let you know with the paperwork, but its the paperwork in africa that concerns me more so than europe, and as I understand it, its the paperwork that goes with the car thats tricky, not so much the people, although thats just what I read on the internet, and any idiot car write stuff on the internet (as you are witnessing)

How the f.uck are you going to get to Africa from France via Turkey/Siyria and Israel..Jesus are you serious or just a wind up plonker...

My point was that although physically possible (i.e. theyre all connected by land, bridges over the suez ect) it isnt possible without being shot/arrested/beheaded on the internet
