Hey,

Got to the stage on my rebuild / restoration where I'm pairing the gearbox & engine and mouting to new chassis, only trouble is that the crossmember under the bellhousing (not gearbox crossmember) seems to be stopping the gearbox from meeting its rear mountings - the clutch assembly on the bell housing is hitting the support for the crossmember under it. I've tried to post a picture below to better explain the problem (apologies if the above made little or no sense).

It looks to me like the only way to solve it is to angle grind out a small part of the offending chassis, but I didn't want to do this if I didn't need to, I got the chassis (galvanised) from a very well known company so find it hard to believe they've made a mistake and so i'm guessing other people have had the same trouble? Or am I just going terribly wrong somewhere?

Any help / suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Other question - anybody know of anywhere to get hold of a complete brake line kit for a SWB series 3? Not sure if such a kit exists..or whether i'm just going to have to make the lines up myself.

Many Thanks,

Matt

you can buy complete brake line kits, from paddocks and also off ebay. as for the chassis if you have the old chassis get a tape measure and check the distance of the x members, the last thing you want to do is chop the chassis and spoil all the good work already done, regards jim

looks like you're missing some gearbox mounting bits. There's a bracket on the box (shown) plus a rubber mount plus a bracket that fits on the chassis - these are missing from the picture. This would probably lift the back of the box enough. There's not a lot of clearance between the bellhousing and the chassis.

The mounting bracket for the gearbox is missing in the pic, but even when fitted, you can't tighten the nut on the rubber mounting at all - the bell housing is literally resting tight to the chassis - surely the level of noise and vibration will be huge if it remains touching?

just had a lookie at mine there is about 15mm from bottom of bell housing to X member - take a photo of engine mounts and post.

perhaps if you stopped tryin ta mek a series 3 gearbox fit a series 2 chassis without addressing it with a grinder it mite fit:rolleyes:

Can't take pics of engine mounts as camera at home, but they all look fine and tight, as should be (compared to photos with engine on old chassis).

Are you saying thats a series 2 chassis then?

It's not the bottom of the bell housing thats touching - its the part of the bell housing that connects to the clutch slave cylinder (the kind of housing)

oh an yer could ask sirus ta pop outside his and check the differences as theres a series 2 and 3 out there with available access to said members, think you,ll find that the series 3 does,nt have the deep reinforcing angles in place

Just checked a few pics online and that cross member does look one off a series 2, are there any other differences between a series 2 and 3 chassis?
