Mounting (home made) awning to gutter of 110

Hi guys,

Searched the site but mainly finding discussions on roof tents.

I want an awning to fit onto my 110.

I can't fit a roof rack and mount to that (height issues for parking at work) and don't want it perminantly mounted on the side due to size and also height the gutter is.

My solution was to make one and then fix it to the opposite side I want the awning to stick out so I make use of the height of the roof? (if that make sense). ie mount one side, fold over roof and have 2 awning poles near to roof height.

Just wondering if anyone has done this before or how they'd go about fixing it to the gutter. (must be easily removable though).

Only thoughts I can come up with are by clamping it to the gutter (don't really want this as still struggling to seal one water tight). Other was drill it with boat type twist clips (sorry don't know technical name) and eyelets but that means messing with the gutter again!

Any help appreciated.

Would your parking height restrictions allow for roof bars instead of a roof rack? Some roof bars are quite low to the roof.

what did you make the homemade awning from canvass? And what about re coiling it? I want to make somthing similar but will go from my roof rack instead of the roof.

I once did this to a old VDub camper van, worked a treat.

Many many years ago now though, so no details!

Got hold of a strip of tarp type material, 3m wide? 10m long? Drilled small holes along the gutter and pop on type eyelets along one edge of the tarp.

Some simple knots link eyelets to holes in gutter and tie on to gutter holes. Couple more eyelets for auning poles couple more on ground edge and voila, tailor made auning.

jai_landrover - I got some acrylic canvas from a boat chandler type place. They do all sorts of materials for covers etc.. Won't roll away will be quickly removable and stowable so can take it when needed.

LeadFarmer - no room for roof bars I'm afraid only have about 10mm of clearance. Like the idea of using one side of the roof bars somehow though as they clamp to the gutter.

bluehaze - sorry, no pics, not even started making it yet.

Stuballsed - nice idea, trying not to drill gutter though as already leaks and would only make it worse I'm sure.

So far the only thing I can think of is to sew in a sleeve into one side and slide in a tent pole and drop it into gutter and then clamp it. possibly with below:
This would still cause pressure points on the canvas though.

Other idea's would be some sort of c shape material that drops onto gutter or just bungeeing them down!

In the end decided on the pic attached.. Couldn't attached it with enough confidence so took a pole and made the awning. Had straps coming down the oposite side of the vehicle and attached the 3 straps to underside or side steps.

Im not sure what youve decided but I can tell you for sure the plastic lip thing is NO GOOD at all. One breath of wind and it pings off the gutter.

I would recommend some 1 inch webbing straps (x3) attached to eyelets on the landy side of your awning and have them long enough to go right over the roof and pegged into the ground, then have you awning on poles with guy ropes as planned. Make sense?? That way NOTHING is attached to the landy.
