Please help! Ive scraped a few quid together to upgrade the performance on my 99 td5 90. Searched the internet for the usual performance packages (jeremy fearn, twisted performance and td5alive) but apart from the price i dont know the difference between the lot of them and would appreciate any experience/help people can give me. Would pay as much (within reason) as i could to improve the performance and quite like the look of the performance packages 3 and 4 on the td5alive website however is it money well spent when the j.f upgrade (intercooler and chip) is £850 plus vat. Thanks for help!

First thing I did was dump the EGR crap. I'm not saying you will feel any difference but at least you know the engine is getting clean combustion air and not being strangled.

Then I fitted a big bore straight through exhaust system from TD5Alive. It makes a noticable difference in engine pick up and sounds great without being anti social.

I went for a modified Stage2 remap which gave large increases in both torque and power. I needed strong towing capability and wanted a lively performance when pulling out of junctions etc. Gary at TD5ALive spent more than four hours tuning the map to what I wanted. Believe it or not my mpg has gone up slightly as well.

Along with that he modified the ECU to allow higher boost pressures of up to 2 bar (factory is 1 bar) before registering an overboost error and switching to limp mode. I run at 18psi max which makes my TD5 a bit of a sleeper. I can stay with most cars upto about 60mph and I've had a true 101mph shown on the sat nav with standard Defender gearing. I was running higher boost but it made no obvious difference and you risk overheating the valves and exhaust manifold if you over do it. Unless you are running high turbo boost pressures an uprated intercooler is probably not necessary. Just bolting one on will give you no noticable increase in performance.

My next mod is to get a decent Disco tranny box or get Ashcrofts to rebuild mine to give it longer legs in high range.

Gary at TD5Alive will modifiy your mapping to your engine and does not just produce a generic solution. The old adage stands true - YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.
