Not for the first time, I seek the Forum's help. You may remember that I was re-building the engine out of my 1993 200tdi, and was seeking advice on parts suppliers. That was forthcoming and I'm most grateful, not least as the engine is now re-built and, almost, ready to go back in. So what's the issue? In short, and on strip down inspection, the turbo is buggered (a technical term) - cracks around the cast iron relief valve aperture. I've searched the usual LR parts suppliers and I'm reluctant to pay £750 - £850 for a replacement. And I'm struggling to locate a refurbed version. Any advice would be greatly appreciated e.g. contact details of a refurb unit and/or advice as to whether cracks around the relief valve are as catastrophic as they appear to me. I'll try to download a photo. Many thanks TimB

Get a 2nd hand one off of ebay and have that rebuilt.
Cracks in casing would suggest to me it has been hot very hot, was the engine tuned beforehand?

Pic of tuned td5 turbo casing that cracked, Iirc it had another crack that ran right though to the outside of the casing, this was quite heavily tuned, 2nd hand unit and away we went again.

Many thanks Lynall. My 200tdi is bog standard and hasn't, as far as I know, overheated etc. However, she did blow the head gasket at almost 200k miles, hence the re-build, so maybe she needed a rest?! But I'll take a look at eBay and see what's on offer. Thank you again. TimB

To be honest Doriz, I've spent rather a lot on the engine rebuild, including the injector pump/injectors and had the radiator rebuilt, so funds are a little tight at the moment. But I am acutely aware of the expression 'spoil the ship for a halfpenny worth of tar'.....

By hot I actually meant hot as in tuned, ie the injector pump has been tweaked.
200 blowing its head gasket is not unusual at all, nearly always back of number 4 cylinder, if you are lazy and leave it to long it actually burns the paint off of the bulkhead apparently:oops:

Sorry, got it now Lynall. As far as I know the injector pump was set as standard too. But no complaints about head gasket going - on No 4 - not with almost 200k on the clock. First heard a chuffing sound, investigated and found the breach, so parked her up and contemplated the next step. I could have just replaced the head gasket in situ of course, but went for the full-rebuild instead. For which I have no regrets - until the state of the turbo was discovered! Onwards and upwards!
