Went out yesterday(without caravan), about 25 miles, no problem. Engine did not overheat, run very nicely. Thought, okay give it a go with the caravan this morning. Started car, ''on the button' as usual, drove out of the driveway and it started to miss a beat. At the same time there was a tiny puff of white smoke from the exhaust. The engine also cut out a couple of times. Engine was cold at this time.
We have had overheating problems and replaced radiator, stat, water pump, belts, tensioner, pressure cap etc. All seemed okay till last week when we took the caravan for a run and got a about 5 miles or so and on a long drag it started to overheat. Did not get into the red however.
Just a though, recently changed the fuel filter, could it be a dodgy fitler caising starvation?
Any suggestions PLEASE

You can expect the gauge to rise slightly when the engine is working hard. As long as it never goes beyond the white area and returns to roughly the centre on the flat it should be ok.

Hi wammers, when it 'overheated' with the caravan on the gauge went just beyond the white marker but not into the red then went back to 12 o'clock pretty quickly.
The current problem is that is that it seems to 'miss a beat' and has actually cut out. When it does this there is a small puff of smoke from the exhaust. I only picked up on this as I saw it in the mirror while reversing. It does seem like fuel starvation (or is that me clutching at straws?) I have recently changed the fuel filter and think there might be a slight airlock or a dodgy filter.

Check that the intank pump is working, that would cause fuel starvation, although it would also cause a lack of power whilst towing.

I was thinking of that, although the in tank pump is fairly new. At least I can check it easily as I used canyon's method to change it! I guess there could be a fault with it or maybe some kind of obstruction. I will keep you posted. Thanks wammers.

Having sorted out the freezer I lifted my access panel to the pump and switched on the ignition - no sound. Removed the feed pipe to the fip and tried again - still no sound from the pump. So, being a fairly new pump, (Island 4x4) fitted 3rd April so I would expect it to be okay. I know it was working when I fitted it but since then I don't. Can anyone tell me the colours of the electrically cable to the pump so I can check I am getting an electrical feed to it? Other than that I reckon I am going to have to take the pump out and check its not blocked or not working for some other reason.

Taken the in tank fuel pump out and tested across 12v battery, nothing! so not working at 3 months old. Island 4x4 closed till Monday - they are moving to a new warehouse. There does seem to be some muck in the tank but not a huge amount.

Ordered a new pump, arriving Monday. Emptied the tank to find a load of black, gooy substance on the bottom, reckon that is what has buggered the pump. So, now I need to remove the tank and give it a good clean out. Anyone got any tips on how to do it?

The temp gauge on mine sits at 10 oclock, when towing my twin axle caravan it mover just fractionily past 12 oclock on hills, but returns to the 10 oclock poss when back on the flat.

As for the black gooey stuff in the tank, I had the same when using Bio Diesel in my lorries, it caused all sorts of fuelling problems in the Volvo, but my DAF's and Scanias were ok. I switched back to normal derv and that cured the problem after using Biocide to clean our the fuel system.

Thanks for that one acc. I know of a few people using bio in these cars and they don't seem to have any problems. I only bought the p38 because I was using bio in my disco but could not find a decent replacement and was told these run well on it. I reckon I will try double filtering it through 1 micron filter.

Got a new in tank pump from Paddock cos Island 4x4 were not answering the phone cos they were moving. New pump arrived Monday morning - with the wrong olives. Should have just ordered from Island 4x4 website and tried to sort out refund or exchange later. So still immobile grrrrr!
