After the gearbox and windows now the engines sounding like a bag of nails....and I'm starting to loose the will to live :(

I've attached a recording if anyone can give me some pointers to what's causing this tapping noise. Seems to be running ok and sounded most noticeable a few days ago.

I had thought not running on all cylinders - maybe an injector issue but doesn't that usually mean it wont start..

Seem to recall someone posting something similar a few months back but can't recall what it was.

Cheers

Just had the AA to it - they think it's mechanical and coming from the timing chain area. Mentioned something about a tensioner coming loose/cracking.

Think i've read something on here about that.

crank pulley damper. look for signs of movement (rust or shiny metal) between the inner and outer pulley

just had my crankshaft pulley done - picking it up tomorrow - still relieved it was that rather than water pump / alternator / or something else more costly.

Well I think we have the culprit. No signs of wear but I think all those little white specs are tiny metal particles.

anyone tried on of these? Believe landy part is over £200

CRANKSHAFT CRANK PULLEY LANDROVER FREELANDER 2.0 TD M47 on eBay (end time 24-Feb-11 19:00:23 GMT)

Well I've ordered the ebay bit - seems they sold quite a few. Will let you know how it pans out.

Genuine LR parts - about £266 for pulley, bolt and key so feel with worth risk if it doesn't last as long.

Are you gonna fit it yerself?

going to get my mechanic to do this one, it's an auto so difficult to lock engine and i know it will be murder to shift the bolt. he has decent air tools which make it a 30 min job. doubt he'll charge me more than a few quid.

not 100% this is the cause of rattle but worth it for hundred plus as its no doubt worn.

Looking on that ebay site they sold 5 since December so must be a common fault.

Well the £99.99 ebay crank pulley fitted and no more rattles.

My mechanic said it was murder to get it off :)

Wonder what's gonna go next....

That's why I asked if you were gonna do it yourself.

Glad you got sorted - when it goes it sounds like a lot worse problem.

Thanks. It started out of the blue (although I had thought engine 'note' had changed) and drove for just over a week as I had no alternative.

Can lead to crank shaft failure I believe, if not sorted.

Arrrggg driven 10-15 mins and rattles back but no where near as bad. Where to look next? Only noticeable on idle.

Curious - how would crankshaft pulley failure damage the crankshaft? ie what could happen? I thought the crankshaft would be incredibly strong, and shouldn't be able to be bent by the belt tension / crankshaf pulley tension.

I thinks it correct description is crank shaft pulley damper. I assume but not sure how the rubber damper prevents too much vibration from the crank shaft. That on mine is what had failed. Can't understand why still getting some rattle unless the cheap part is u/s or another pulley is on the way out.

Is there some kind of tensioner for the chain?

Is there some kind of tensioner for the chain?

From what my mechanic said there are a couple of tensioners on the timing chain loop and that its a relatively complicated system (time-wise for repair). Although he also said that in all his years he'd only had one TD4 come in with chain / tensioner problems.

This is the same mechanic who did my crankshaft damper / pulley - he said that there COULD be a slight bend in the crankshaft, but that it would only be caused by one hell of a knock - ie the type of knock you really notice. I was driving for a short while with the rattle - no damage done apparently. Hence my question.

ps. when he did my pulley, he also changed the serpentine tensioner since he said it was due a change - that was making some bearing noise too.

Could become an expensive guessing game this. Does anyone know if I can remove the bottom belt - one driving the AC to rule out the bottom two pulleys as this is where i think the noise is coming from. Could also be the tensioner.

Just been under it. I hate to say it but looks like the AC pulley has a little play in it. Sounded worse when i engaged the AC. Now i've removed the wheel arch cover can see the belt vibrating on the wheel. Also some slack in the tensioner.

I'm wondering if the knackered crank pully has f'ecked the other two :(:mad:

Well had belt off and can confirm still rattles - so no AC or ac tensioner. What a pain in ass that was to get back on.

That leaves alternator, water, oil and other tensioner. PAS was changed few years ago so should be sound.

Relieved no AC, now hoping it's the tensioner like others have had an not something more serious. I've read a few threads on Disco forum saying a bit of silicone spray might sort.
