So, finally getting round to ordering up the parts for the brake upgrades I’ve been wanting to do.

Have decided to go for vented front discs. I know that means I have to change the callipers, but it does raise a couple of questions I’d like to get opinions on before I order.

Firstly, will I have clearance issues with the standard stock wheels by fitting the wider callipers needed for vented discs?

Secondly, I was thinking at getting the more expensive EBC discs (have already decided on EBC pads), but wonder how much difference (if any) these will have over other vented disc makes, such as AP or Britpart etc?

Also, on a practical note, how much of a crap job is it to take off and refit the hub assemblies? Everything I’ve read says they need re-shiming with a dial gauge when they go back on.

firstly ive used britpart vented for years been very good switched to ebc pads last summer was marked improvement so i suppose there discs would make improvment too, wont effect wheels fitting is easy you cant adjust any thing apart from wheel brg just make sure everthing mating surface wise is clean and tighten bolts opposite each other ,you dont need to check with dti run out unless you suspect some fault later

Out of interest which pads? Green stuff 6000 seems to be the ones to use.

And which tyres do you have?

So, having spent some time googling various parts, it seems the internet is well opposed to Britpart brake callipers, but for unspecified reasons (mainly just not trusting Britpart quality it seems).

Does anyone have any opinions on here? I was planning on the cheaper of the two options on Paddocks. The others being Delphi AP (whatever AP means??).

some of britpart pattern parts are poor , but i work with lrs for a living and i have fitted alot of their calipers and only had to change one in 3 years which they swapped and new one was okay,i wouldnt use theircheap brgs as i by mistake fitted one in 2 recon gearboxes and they only lasted a couple of weeks for one and months for the other cost me the time and money to remove/refit from vehicle and repair, but i dont get the problems that you hear off on here ,i wouldnt think youd have a problem with their calipers

EBC greens are fast road and arnt too good when cold so no good on short journeys or when your not using your brakes much or keeping them hot. One other thing to remember is you will have to inform your Insurance company of any changes to the brake system, so going from solid to vented or x-drilled and really changing from stock to fast road or heavier pads

vented is an improvement and shoudlnt cause a problem as lr did fit them on up rated vehicles, yes your right about green thats why i went for their ultimax

I havent had any probs with britpart stuff.
The upgrades i made were to renew the rotton steel pipes with ncew copper/cunifer pipes, Goodridge flexi hoses new callipers (paddocks ones) new solid discs and pads(AP) Once they were all fitted and bleed there was an amazing difference with the brake's. Best of all i know they will work fine off and on road and i dont have to tell the insurance company about them as there like for like.

I know vented offer better cooling so therfore less chance of brake fade but apart from that the callipers dont exert any more pressure on the pads, So unless your pulling a huge trailer all day why bother ??

Hmm, Didn't realise I'd have to tell the insurance company about fitting vented discs.

Do go off road a bit, but not really upto my axles in thick mud type off roading. Mostly its on road driving and a bit of light wading.

So the consensus is that the paddocks (Britpart) calipers are ok, and the green stuff pads might be overkill.

Not sure what to do now.

use their ultimax better than std and vented where fitted to the higher spec def disco etc, ive found them better and they are sligthly cheaper than non vented, classed as heavy duty and if you have 90 pre 300 tdi they do have largerdiameter pistons so more force exerted
