:DQuick question (I have done a search but could not find answer).:D
:confused:I need to top up the gearbox oil on my series three, I have some AQ3 atf spare after toping up the Rangie can I mix this with the MTF that's already in the box of the landie:):).

Cheers Les

IMO If it was as a temporary top-up until you had enough MTF to drain & re-fill the g/box then I should reckon it'd be fine (better than a dry g/box). As a long term thing it'd be best to re-fill with the oil that's currently inside.

ATF will be no good as a lube for that gearbox
If the level is only down a little say 1/2 litre or less then I would just leave it till you get the right stuff
If the box need more than 50% of it's normal level then for the love of god don't use ATF not even for the weekend go get the right oil now and don't move the s3 morf than a few feet
Using the wrong oil will do more harm than good

You would be better topping it up with engine oil rather than atf as its as thin as water.

OK engine oil it is then for the moment till I can get some MTF thanks for the info boy's the last thing I want is a bugerd gearbox as I have only just put her back on the road.

I got the impression from his original question thats what he had and thats all he could afford for now, basically would this get him out of trouble for now?
Hence as i see it any oil is better than no oil.
I think mtf is 75/70 so not to far out.

I'd be inclined to find the local commercial motor factors, buy a 20/25 litre tub of EP90 and change all the transmission oils (gearbox/transfer case/axles/swivel hubs), your'll always need oil for topping up a series.....
