Missing VIN Plate

I have just been informed that my series has failed its MOT because it does not have a vin plate.
Does anyone know how I can get a replacement.

Blimey, I didn't know that was a MOT failure! This whole new MOT malarky is getting out of hand..........& sorry Dor1s, not a clue!

Well according to the garage, He now requires a computer and a modem in the workshop to perform the new MOT test.
he has to logon to a central system, enter the chassis number, registration number, Make, model and colour of vehicle.

are you sure he knows what he's talking about? seem abit extreme to me. but then thats one reason i left the sophisticating behind too much red tape and bullship.

can`t he take the chassis number of the log book? series land rovers don`t have the chassis number stamped on any where just a alley plate.

The Men From The Ministry are having a big crackdown on,VIN plates and rogue MOT testers.

It was found out by a VOSA official that mail order MOT's were being issued, How did he find out ? HE WAS OFFERED ONE !!!!!!!!

Hence the fact that mot testers are now checked for criminal convictions at the point of training to be a tester!!!!!!!

He can take the chassis number from the registration document.
But I will then be issued a failure notice as there is no VIN plate.

Series III had the chassis number punched into the chassis rail above the offside front spring hanger.

Do you have the Vin Number on the V5 ? If so simply write to the ministry explain the situation and I'm sure they will authorise you to obtain a new one.

Had to do that a few years ago when restoring a classic car the engineer when a touch heavy with the grinder and ground the coding out of the chassis of the car. Ministry sent a nice letter went to the manufacturer bought a blank vin plate hey presto all sorted.

DO NOT just stamp one out of a piece of tin/metal you will have problems with the MoT

If the car had the number punched into the chassis then get it re punched.

I have been in touch with Land Rover, they will issue a replacement VIN plate for a fee.

Also

Series III owners Club will issue a replacement 'replica' vin plate for a smaller fee.

For a large selection of chassis ID and VIN plates and tags.

Vin plates are avalible on ebay, it costs about £ 10 i think, no vin is neded if the car is over a certain age, cant remember exactly but about 1977

Land Rover Vin plates are available on Ebay. Not sure how much but they are available for both long and short wheelbase versions. They have all the info on them except a chassis number. Not sure if it gets stamped on once its bought or if its a case of stamping it yourself.

You might find that a lack of VIN on the vehicle at the MOT test will have raised a flag with VOSA and they could call your truck in for a Vehicle Identity Check (if you're really unlucky).

Hi all,yes a vehicle does have to have an ID plate for MOT.It does not have to be an official vin style plate,untill Imanaged to find a replica plate for my series 2,I used a simple ally plate stamped............VEHICLE I.D.followed by the chassis No. This was then fixed on the inside of the bulkhead where the tester can see it,he can then check that the number tallys with DVLA records Hope this helps
