Missing dip stick

I wonder is some one might be able to give me some advice. My mate has just spotted that his discovery td5's dipstick is missing. Presumably from its last service.

My question are:
1) Is there any issue with running the vehicle without the dipstick (pressurized system??)
2) does anyone know how long the dipstick is.... I think it would be worth checking the oil level but need an idea on how long the gauge is on the original stick.
3) any idea where is the easiest / cheapest / fastest place to buy a new dipstick.

not as long as the hole is covered(as james said) ...and you know some magic way to check the oil level without it
