on a slightly different theme my friends 1.8 the engine light flickers at the top
of the hill out of the village. if he lets it warm up no light.
no faults on the read out .
when it dose flicker is only 4 or 5 times and there is no engine issue at the time of flickering

Yes, I was just trying to get rid of the error by removing the potentially faulty component on the reported cylinder.
Fair enough. I was going to say leads but then reread your first post.
What about the idle control valve? Does it tick over smoothly or rev erratically?
Are all the vac hoses secure and sound?
What about the wiring loom to the injectors? Maybe a bad connection that clears up when warmed?

I'll have to go through that at the weekend. It ticks over erratically.

If you pull the hose off the idle control valve and squirt in some carb cleaner (or WD40 like I did) and it might help the erratic idle, but first make sure there are no leaks in the vac hoses.
