... why on earth won't you stay folded out!

Just about sums it up really. I can fold them out and then the wind (or some other more mysterious force) folds them straight back in again. I've heard that some models had power folding mirrors fitted and that you can reset them to behave themselves. My question is :- how do I tell if I have these power folding mirrors? I can't see any switches for them? o_O

Freelander 1 TD4 Kalahari 2003.

;)

The mirror adjustment control joystick is also the fold switch, if you have power fold mirrors. If you have power folds, there's a legend of a mirror on the joystick. To fold, the joystick is pushed downloads, towards the floor. No legend means manual fold mirrors.
It sounds like you could have power folds, but they have been pulled out manually, leaving the mechanism still in the folded position. Alternatively manual mirrors can get damaged if struck.

Thanks to your info Nodge, I've discovered that I do have powered folding mirrors. Cool. Never had a car with those before!
I folded them in and folded them out a few times now and they seem to settled in the out position.
I feel a bit silly, not knowing that they where there...
Thanks again.

that's usually the way to sort-them-out when they misbehave
be aware that they might not like heat .. i think there's a cut-out feature should the motor(s) get too hot ..
i know mine normally refuse to work on a fairly warm day ( e.g. 24c n above ) if parked in the sun
i.e. if i have to fold them in then out more than once ..

if they seem hesitant to fold .. some dry lubricant ( ptfe ) on the hinge point makes it easier on the mechanism

Thanks hd3 that's handy to know. I have some of that ptfe spray knocking about. I'll give them a squirt. ;)

The mot garage didn't know how they worked and pulled them out by hand on mine

I didn't like the noises they made when I reset them :(

Yes! My nearside mirror now makes a machine gun like noise when it's reset.
I've noticed that there's no horizontal adjustment (on either mirror) via the switch on the dash.
Could both of these things be due to me trying to position them by hand?
Hope I've not broken another thing..!

Does the switch just pull out of the dash?
Yes it pulls out of the facia. You can get a knife blade under the bezel for a bit of leverage;)
Seems odd that two mirrors would go faulty with the same fault. The switch and wiring is common to both though.

Thanks to all of you. I had the side mirrors flopping when driving; I did not read the instruction manual but the above sequence of questions / answers. And I checked and found out, that my Freely has the electrical folding mirrors. Everything is OK by now! Again thanks and good day.
