Might be buying a Disco tomorrow!

Have seen a Disco I really like - 52 plate facelift model, 83k, 7 seater, Td5, not sure what model it is yet, but seems to have lots of toys! Towbar, FSH. Screen price is £5295 with 1 month warranty, but he said he may barter a little for cash.
ETA: It looks to be a GS model probably, looking at the spec.

Couple of q's, and I'm sure I'll think of some more before tomorrow when I go back with hubby:

How do I know if it has ACE?
What are the service intervals - is it due a huge one?

ACE - look underneath, there will be linkages on the suspension etc

Service - every 12,000 miles, no big deal, mainly oil change and engine filters (yep, there are 2)
Transmission oils every 24k

I know there is more, but those are the basics

That's too expensive. Not worth more than £4500 - with 12 months warranty!

I seen a 300 TDI on Auto Trader a little while ago on a 52/53 plate for under 4K they are out there.

Oh right, I thought it seemed quite good value actually, and ebay seems to agree. However, what you're saying gives me renewed confidence that it will still be there tomorrow, and that I won't be too cheeky trying to get a discount Off to have a look round Autotrader now...

Go for a low milage Y plate and then you wont get stung with the stupid road tax

Thanks for that, but I don't want a 2001 Disco because it's both in the high tax band, and also pre-facelift, lol!! I think the high tax came in from Y plate, so X plates and back are safe (I have an X-reg Frontera at the moment).

If I buy a Disco, I really want it to be the 2002 facelift onwards, as I think they look really nice (edit - and they did quite a few other improvements at the same time). I don't want an older car (2000 back) as it wouldn't really be worth swapping the Frontera for (I've had it 4 years so it's a known quantity).

To show my cards, this is the Disco I'm tempted for:
2002 52 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY 2.5 TD5 DIESEL
and it's only 10 minutes down the road from me,

but this is the late contender into the mix:
Mitsubishi Shogun Pajero 3.2 DID LWB 7str DIESEL

I need a really beefy car as I regularly tow two heavy horses around, and I live at the top of a very steep hill...

Just thought of another thing, if I test drive it tomorrow - in the Fronty, I can't drive on tarmac in 4wd or I get wind up. Now I know the Disco is permanent 4wd, but what's on the lever in front of the gear stick, which position should it be in, and can/should I test it somehow?

the second gear leaver gives you Low box.It changes the transferbox from "high,road"to "low,offroad".It will also have a difflock select in low .I have not been in disco 2 but belive it the same as others.Use the high setting gears on the road.The change should be made stationary for beginners as its not quite like the jap stuff.You can change when moveing off in low to high if you have a big load but only change up to 5mph or so and it will take pratice.
It would be prudent to test all gears in the vehicle and ask if there is some where you can test the difflock off road as use on the tarmac might not suit the present owners tastes...?!!!!!

You can test the low box and difflock by only moving a few feet to at least make sure it goes in, and the light comes on. Be aware though that some D2's didn't have a centre diffflock ...

If it has a diff lock it will be either a 3rd leaver OR another space on the second gear knob eg... Hi...

My range has a 3rd lever to depress along the side of transfer tunnel.
DO NOT RELY ON DIFF LOCK LIGHT AND CHECK MANUALLY BY DRIVEING>

Heh, the lever in front of the gear lever is also like an H box.

Left leg of the H is Lo box Diff lock on at top, neutral in middle, High box diff on at bottom.

Right leg is Lo box no diff at top, Neutral in middle, High box no difflock at bottom.

Normal road driving is right, bottom, ie High box no difflock.

Using difflock on tarmac won't break the transmission if you only do a few feet.

Pic shows mine, which is an earlier model Disco but should be same (R380 etc) gearbox.

Nope, but in my experience a few feet driven with difflock on won't do any harm. If you know different, then fine, say so.

the small lever is for changing from low range to high range come to a stop then push lever all the way up dont do it while moving ! then drive as normalwith the normal gears you will have high revs very quickly so might be best to test on a side road dont forget to put it back to high range for normal driving listen for strange noises and knocking etc

Thanks for the pic - looks like it doesn't have diff lock then, cos although it has the pic saying push to the left for diff lock, it's not written onto the transfer knob - that just says L - N - H, and the lever didn't want to move leftwards. Still, never mind, all else looks fine with it - it was difficult giving it a thorough work out in the middle of Swansea, but it drove really well for hubby and I, and we're picking it up next weekend . It's got a 30 day warranty, so I'll make sure I try everything out before the 30 days is up
