I need some welding doing on my chassis, and I wanna have a go myself, so im intending on buying myself a welder.

I know this thread has been done to death but ive searched the forum and cant find a definitive answer.

Right ive been looking at sealey and Clarke 100 amp and 150 amp welders.

gasless ones
Gasless and gas
Just gas

but basically guys I just wanna now whats best, and what I would be able to do my chassis with and some fabricating if I want to.

and another question why im here what gas should I use CO2 or argon ? how would I go about sourcing that?

DO NOT buy gasless....youll soon wish you didnt.

Gas and as powerfull as you can afford. Pub CO2 works fine if you can find it.

Yep, I would go 150 + gas
I get a lot better weld with an Argon/C02 mix
There are companies about, Adams Gas. Hobby Gas, that will rent
you a bottle, around £50 returnable deposit and £45ish for the gas.
Its dear but cheaper than disposable tins. I have found that some
of the larger motor factors are now doing it and you dont have to have
an account with them.

Using CO2 can give you a brittle weld due to it's inability to shroud the weld during the welding process, it will look ok but could fail so ok in non critical applications. Argon/CO2 mix on the other hand will give a much stronger weld with better penetration. Amps are what gives the weld the heat/penetration, so keep the amps up and adjust the wire speed to suit.

Aye but we're on about welding a rotton landrover by a novice so I suspect thats not a "critical application". CO2 will do just fine :)
