I have been looking to get a second hand mig for a while now, and the used prices seem to be mental, saw one on ebay local to me, i put what i thought was a reasonable bid of £125 ( new you can get the same model for under £240 delivered)
It sold for £190!! surely it must be worth the extra £50 for a new one from a shop. Or am i missing something.

I spent over £2k on a Lincoln brand new and they are selling just under that second hand. Good quality machines hold their price. The cheap chinese seems to be selling quite well at the moment though for some reason

I always go for new as you get a warranty and if you buy from the right place, they even know what they're talking about!

People pay silly money on ebay. My rule of thumb is never pay over half the new price of any second hand item on ebay

I sold some genuine land rover panels that I got from the local land rover dealer for more than I got them for. Even after fees I made a profit

People are idiots. They think evilBay is gospel :blabla:

we have about 11 murex machines at work going for scrap as they have been updated with newer ones- kills me I am not allowed to even think of taking them home

Offer your boss scrap money for them, no harm in asking. I'll have one off of you.

is it health and safety related? i.e. if you take them home and hurt yourself or if they end up in the wrong hands your company is liable?

If so, offer them a disclaimer. You will sign to say you are taking these items away to dispose of them and you guarantee that there will be no comeback on the company that donated them regardless of who gets hurt or injured or who's hands they end up in.

You keep a copy and let them keep a copy, and you're all happy.

that's mental! so not so old machines are going to scrap?

unless you can tip us of when the srap delivery van is going to turn, and we turn up instead? and snatch the welders?

I'm also looking for a new MIG as my little SIP100 is getting on my nerves recently.... I need something with a bit more power

no chance guys sorry , not worth my job :(

cant even get one for myself

fett - did you see my last post? I assume you did... but...

my suggestion is all above board, nothing dodgy, nothing illegal and nothing against company rules. We are paranoid about health and safety, laws and regulations and the company's own rules here, but the company is more than happy to go down the declaration route (as described below) with us because it's better for the environment, it's not illegal and there can be no comeback on them.

Seriously... doing something dodgy might lose you your job, but asking to do something legitimate to help the environment with no comeback on themselves shouldn't cause any grief at all.

Anyway... i'm not after one of these... just trying to help out... see my (slightly edited) previous post below.

...offer them a disclaimer. You will sign to say you are taking these items away to dispose of them (or recycle them, or whatever - it's irrelevant really) and you guarantee that there will be no comeback on the company that donated them regardless of who gets hurt or injured or who's hands they end up in once they have left the premises.

You then give them away to people with another disclaimer to protect yourself if they hurt someone in future. Or keep them for yourself of course.

You keep a copy of the disclaimer forever and let them (the company) keep a copy, and you're all happy.
