:alien: ive got a series 3 diesel and the front dumb irons need replacing so i want to get myself a mig welder to do this job but im stuck at what size mig i need (amp wise) has anyone done this job and what size welder did you use. thankyou:blabla:

yer only want to weld a chassis at 35 - 45 amp MAX so any size will do fer ocasional use, the chassis is only a few mm thick int it ,

I have an old Clarke 155 amp mig welder. I usually have it set to maximum power for chassis welding. If you've never welded before then I'd strongly recommend that you get someone who knows what they are doing to give you some lessons, or at the very least spend several hours practising on scraps of metal before tackling the chassis repair.

Agreed with fenby. I have to admit, I have never attempted to weld, I just watch my stepdad do all of that and then marvel at the result. Stick and mig was used on the repair of mine.

Is the idea to replace or repair the dumb irons?

hi
150 amp mig will give you all the power you want.
practise on some scrap steel first, and remember that you can only weld steel to steel.
NOT steel to rust.
Prepare carefully and thoroughly.

Practice first, it should sound like frying eggs!

Make sure old and new metal is clean, just run the grinder over. Be confident when welding.

When underneath wear some gaunlets, and do your collar up! Nothing worse that smacking your head on the chassis when you get a tickler down your top!
