Does anyone have ideas on how to save a few quid on co2 welding gas, i seem to be getting through a small fortune doing the welding needed for my 300 tdi. Currently using disposable bottles from b and q £11 a pop and there only lasting half a day, rang BOC in exeter today and s*ate myself with the price of the hire of the bottle, refill charge and "other costs" live in exmouth and need a cheaper alternative

pub co2 bought an adapter at local welding supplies place(tell them it's pub gass)
local gas place £11 bottle no return or rental fee.

might be worth a trip to trago at newton abbott - last time I looked, their bottles were £5.99. was a while ago though, so fone em before travelling!

Thought about the pub gas bottle route ,, how does it work getting a refill ? Do you get "not our bottle sir" so no refill ?

no refill £11 and keep the bottle or take back if you wish:D yes it is full pub size co2

I got an old c02 bottle, pub size (ca. 3ft) from the scrappy for free and get it replaced from local motor factors for £20 a pop - jim barkers in widnes. A lot cheaper than disposibal route and you can crack the gas right up and not worry about what its costing :)

gas place I use will have them back if you want or keep them if you wish

get a cylinder from your local boozer, most motor factors will do you a refill for about £15-£20 should last you ages. Tip make sure you turn the bottle off when not in use, I had a leaking reg and emptied a full size argon/co2 mix in a month!

Pub gas is the way forward. Speak nicely to the landlord of your local or get an account with you nearest local shop that deals in pub gas. A lot of wine merchants and such like rent the bottles out. Best not to say you are using it for welding because such practice is frowned upon, say you have a small catering business or something if they ask :)

But yeah pub co2 is exactly the same as any other co2 the only difference is that it is 'food grade' so it has been produced and bottled in a clean/sterile environment.

And of course the price, think its something like £15-20 for a 25kg bottle - enough to last most people a year of light welding.

****e!
half a day?? what pressure you using??

I've welded loads on my disco and only used 2 little botles.. I have the pressure at 1,5bar..

Or alternatively the guys that fill the drinks m/c up at work, if it has cold fizzy drinks on the menue. costs me £10 a change, full bottle for empty one.

i used pub co2 for years but got a large boc argoshield for £50 (out the back door) and will never be going back to co2 loads better to weld with

Argoshield 'T' I think is the latest gas and it is good. I use to rent a bottle from BoC until it got so expensive. It started out at £75 for 5 years, then £75 for 3 years and I think its now £110 for 2 years, and thats just the rental, the gas extra. A mate of mine uses a company called 'Air Products' who are apparently about half the price of BoC.
