The outer skin of the boxes is galvanised mild. The inner skin of the boxes and pipes are low grade stainless. This is how the exhaust systems have a life of well over 10 years.

I must say, I'm struggling to get my head round that one! I don't think I've ever seen a galvanized exhaust. Certainly, none of our suppliers use it. Zinc melts at just over 400 degrees. I've only ever seen aluminised and stainless on a modern car (i.e. post 1960s). I also can't really think why they'd want to make a double-skinned silencer out of two different materials? Certainly, cat cans are nearly always stainless - partly because they're expensive to replace and partly because of the heat. It's also true that more and more OE systems are being made of stainless (as you say, pretty low grade) but this one certainly looks like aluminised mild!

As much as anything, I think the much better durability of modern exhausts is down to a reduction in the sulphur content of fuel and the presence of the cat - both of which reduce the acid content of exhaust gas..
