P38A Middle exhaust silencer

Hi and Thankyou to everyone for the time and consideration you've always given me.
My question is - are the mid-box the same dimensions for all p38's (2.5/4.0/4.6)?

The reason I ask is I'm gonna have to replace the middle exhaust section on my 2.5. Standard one £65 however, for few quid more I can get a s/s straight pipe (no box) but it's labeled for 4.0/4.6. As far as I can tell this should also fit a 2.5?

And, is the lack of a silencer likely to negatively affect balance of inlet/outlet pressure in head/turbo?
I'm led to believe it's an improvement although I'm much more interested in your guy's opinions

A straight pipe may fail the new MOT, it would here in France. £85 for a bit of straight stainless? They are taking the ****, you should be able to buy a bit of SS pipe from a steel stockholder for a tenner or so. However if you are fitting a straight pipe I wouldn't waste money on SS, mild steel would do fine.

Just cut the silencer out and put a bit of straight pipe in, less than a tenner.

True, but on both mine it was the end plates on the box that had gone and when I looked, also the bends above the back axle. Fitted a cat back Double S stainless on both.

Thankyou Brian that is perfect, for that price I have to try it.

For the main - exhaust seems okay. It past it's last mot with a patch on the over axle pipe and the inside of the silencer is probably disintegrated so wouldn't have done much. I bought it without an mot so patch was okay temp I have more time get it done properly now.
. But the pipe going over the axle is too far gone. Single tailpipe was swapped out couple years ago, front pipe is original but seems in good condition albeit a little surface rust

Any change in tone of sound? Seems to make difference to V8, diesel I not so sure?
I do like the sound of the straight6 mind if you boot it

I was thinking the same a very good price, I was looking at the stainless one but could not justify the price, but 28 quid its actually cheaper than a middle box.

I like the sound of silence, less tiring on a long run. The new double tail pipe system is very quiet

It's a very quiet vehicle so long as you keep the windows closed. Mine is bit loud with the broken pipe, gets quieter just by putting my hand over it.

Quieter still with the viscous removed on the diesel.

Do the same as vw have done on the new up gti the noise is put through the speakers and not to loud outside

If anyone's interested we could always make a cd of rattly tappets and squeaky ancillary pulleys for them? That way anyone could get the 'diesel experience' just without the mileage benefits

Better than the sound of water and steam escaping or liners pinging up and down on the V8

Unfortunately the diesel engine being far far more reliable than the V8 is often neglected service wise by a lot of owners.

Old cars often seem to suffer neglect, not just the engine. Running a Range Rover on a shoestring will always end in tears.

Yes, the original owner took a lot of pride in my vehicle, but since then I think it's been neglected. Rolling it over broke a few things but it's starting to come together. I can't explain how, as this isn't my 1st LR, I just fell in love with it.

It's working out much less expensive than I imagined. Hopefully after few years of ownership shel be going well, if not I'm gonna get another P38 diesel and have plenty of spares
