if you cannot see engine type or model number give me the serial number off the side of the fuel injection pump it looks like a Bosch VE type in which case it should have a ten digit number starting 0 460 or another series of number starting VE4 or both.. The injectors may also have a two digit code stamped next to fuel inlet these also can identify engine type if original items. The pump numbers can be hard to read and on later ones are only laser printed so be careful not to rub them off if you need to clean it. I used to get a bit of paper and a soft lead pencil and take a "brass rubbing" of it but these days you should be able to get picture with your mobile. I should be able to get my mate to check the engine application/ power output and max engine speed from pump number and maybe even the original vehicle type it came from.

So they're a bit too powerful for the drivetrain then? is it fine if i'm aware and careful?

300 squid is worth it for a decent performance increase! I'll give them a shout when i ID the engine, Thanks!

It will be fine, just don't rev it up at the lights, and dump the clutch. If you don't mind spending the money, the Ashcroft stuff is very good.

Another thing I have found useful for finding engine numbers is a lighted mirror on a telescopic stick. They are only a few quid from tool shops and discount stores.

If it is a T4.236 the max torque is not much more than a lightly tweeked TD5 the problem is that torque is there from about 1200rpm so be careful particularly in low range. Typical max rpm will only be about 2600 but I can confirm from pump number if you can read it

Thanks! i'll be home shortly so will have a look :)

I took a quick look whilst passing home and found this if it helps with ID? if not let me know and i'll have a better look later!

Thanks everyone! :)

That is a part number or casting number on the manifold.
The engine number will be stamped on a flat on the cylinder block. It may be partly hidden by other parts, which is why we were explaining ways you will be able to read it easily^^^^^^^.

Pump identifies it as Perkins T4.236.75Kw version so approx 100Bhp. It was originally set for 2600rpm under load so might run 2700 or 2800 rpm on light load. From memory a few more revs could be safely used if engine is good. Some marine versions ran up to 2800 on load and probably a bit higher max fuel too

If you know what gearbox, transfer box and diffs you have then Ashcroft do a handy convertor to see how fast you will get in gears::::: https://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/calc/ratio_calc.html

That's very useful, and a great tool. Thank you! i'll have to do lots more poking around to find out the model numbers of gearbox etc, i'm pretty sure they're stock though.

Sadly it seems this engine isn't really fit for my needs so i'll probably replace the engine, or the whole car (deffo want to stay with a LR though!) being limited to 50 isn't the end of the world, but the noise this beast makes in doing so isn't great on long drives! Or is that just land rovers in general?
I'm new to LRs and mostly won't be using it to go further than an hour or two (if that) on the motorway, but it would be nice to have the option of a 6 hour drive to Cornwall or Scotland without filling myself with dread!

Dare I ask for Engine/transmission suggestions capable of getting me close to 80mph?

Thanks for your help! you guys are gods of knowledge which is great for a 21 year old keen to learn, like myself!

If you want to cruise at 80 you should probably not drive a defender. You would need a lot more than 100bhp! Stick a V8 in it if you can live with single figure fuel consumption lol

+1 - Deafener not suited to 80 IMHO. D1's will do this, and a common mod is to change the Deafener 1.4 transfer ratios for the D1 1.22 ... but it's still a Deafener

300Tdi* can be tuned to 150 Hp quite easily :) .... 200Hp possible .... BUT more HP mean higher EGT's and higher EGT's will anneal the cylinder head in short order :eek::eek: .... Do a search on here :)

* = 200 Tdi can also be tuned :) - in some ways the better engine as it will take higher boost pressures ... in some ways worse for other reasons - TD5 is also very tunable ... but electronics are not my cup of tea .

I have the 1.2 in mine with a 200tdi and 265/75 tyres. It will sit at speedo indicated 70/75 (satnav speed about 65/70) happily. It will get to an indicated 80 but you know you are pushing it hard and it is not comfortable. I would suggests if you want to sit at 80 for long periods on the motorway you are better off getting a golf and keeping the land rover for fun things. It is much better to just accept that you will be driving at 65/70, add 10 min onto your journey time, and spend every minute of it with a big smile on our face.

Amen. Nailed it. Completely. :)
