OK, a couple of months ago I announced my modified truck (93) 200tdi, complete with Craddocks 2" lift springs ect, I also said I had no problems with vibration ect........................however, at the weekend a clunking noise started from the O/S suspension whilst going over rough ground. It appears the front radius arm bushes on that side were shot. Today I replaced all four bushes and now have quite a bad vibration which starts at about 20 kph and and gets worse as the speed increases. After the usual checks for example; did I tighten the wheels? I took off the front propshaft and all was well, there is no play in the u/js and they are greased every three months without fail, put it back 180 and the vibration is the same, put it back as it was and same vibration, take it off and all is perfect.

It seems that the worn bushes were allowing the diff to tilt upwards countering the effects of the lifted suspension and also absorbing some of the propshaft movement. Right, I would like members to do me a favour and when they get a minute measure the distance between the centre of their road wheels to the wheel arch lip. Please only give information on vehicles that are standard in the suspension department and not laden down with extra equipment.

With this data I can decide whether the addition of the winch, twin batteries and iheavy iron bumper ect will bring down the front suspension the 2" that I have lifted it. Further, it could be my imagination but the back springs appear to be sagging after only 4/5 months and about 7000 kms, just threw that in as an observation.

Now assuming the truck will not come down enough to stop the vibes I have heard mention of a 'cardon prop' could someone enlighten me?

thanks in advance

Dave

OK the saga continues......the vibration is still there! The springs are now back to standard as are the shocks, wheels and tyres (balanced). There is no play in either prop but I have done the following:

Fitted a new rear prop as it is cheap anyway.
Fitted a new double cardon front prop with new flange to suit.
All bushes on radius arms replaced.
Removed the harmonic damper and the vibration got worse so I put that back.

All I can say is that since fitting the dc prop the vibration has moved higher up the speed range and now it starts about 40 mph and gets worse as you approach 70 ish anything over that and its a trip to the dentist to replace my fillings.

Could a worn front output shaft bearing cause this much vibration? There is a very slight lift in both output shaft bearings, I am replacing the clutch in a few weeks so could do the bearings then is it difficult?

An ideas?
Thanks in advance

it certainly could. i had a prob with the bearing on the rear output shaft. was worn and started a small vibration, which worked the big nut in the centre of the flange for the brake drum loose, which then ferked up the second bearing on the output shaft.

i never noticed it until it was too late cos the landy lives offroad.

Mine does a fair amount of motorway work and despite some serious kit (air lockers F & R) heavy duty steel shafts/CVs/flanges I do treat it carefully off road. I like to be able to get back to civilisation after a weekend in the cmpo so tend to tread carefully. So abuse is not an issue either.
