not really the same thing as merlins however nice ,now what was the engine they used sucessfully in p51 mustang, theres a running lacaster just down the road from us ,they bring out taxi etc

Yes James the P51 was an aircraft built by North American for the RAF from an airministry spec as a long range escort fighter. But it was bloody usless with the Allison engine, but a brilliant aircraft when they fitted the Merlin in it. It had laminer flow wings that made it very slippery. Very good aircraft. Interestingly the aircraft pictured below has a laminer flow wing section.

Seem to remember years ago a guy putting a merlin into a kit car, had to run it on tank mags,, and RR werent happy about him putting an RR grill and badge on it,, to be honest it looked a bit odd, red thing i in grp, but was fast in a straight line

My g/f lives in Bourne near Stamford, we often see the Lanc and Spit ,,,, mostly week ends, saw a DC3 one day so low you could count the rivets. lol been to Duxford that much i now have to pay counsil tax. ive got a few links with the RAF and Hawker Sydley, My great uncle was a test pilot for them, dont think youll know of him but his name was Sqd/Ldr Frank Murphy. He crashed one about 1955ish finished his flying, he ended up selling Hunters to the arabs,,,,,,,,, lol im the only on in the family who didnt fly,,,,,,, family blacksheep i guess

Dont know mate but could ask my great aunt he did do the Hurricane stunt flying in the John Greggson film Angels 2 Zero, and before the war he flew in the Snyder trophy races think he won one,,,, wartime he started out on Hurribacks and went on to Mosquitoes as a night fighter had 5 confirmed kills, hes also mentioned in a book " Aces High" havent a clue who wrote it,,,, hope that helps MHM,,, Spud died a few years back and his ashes were inturned in the RAF cemetary in New Zealand yep Uncle Frank was a Kiwi

Right back to the story line,,,,, The gearbox was beaten in to submission and is now lay on my drive with a wood stake through the heart.

So to strip is it a case of undo the caseing bolts and pull or are there any booby traps,,,,, once out i did the usuall and turn anything i could get my hands on all was turning freely,,, prop flanges input shatf all turned with ease,,, it all seamed to be doing what it should,,,, i wait your replys with bated breath ,,, cheers all

undo 6x bolt holding transfer box to gear box and lever apart ,if you want to know how to do rear housing of gearbox let me know

Hello again James,

The bit i need to get at is the bit where all the gear shifting goes on, the transfer box i think i got covered, its the next 2 sections im looking at the bit with the remote mounting and the real gearbox. once the trans box is off if i pull the next casing off will it all fall apart on me

once trans box removed undo 10 bolts holding rear aliminum housing undo selector yoke, remove interlock retainer ,tap ali housing off gearbox bearing plate the only thing you want to look out for is for it to split between ali cas and brg plate not main case and brg plate, best done with box stood on end but make sure no pressure is put on input shaft and isnt touching bench/floor etc if not going further put 2 x 8mm x 30-40mm long bolts to hold brg plate to main case other wise turn box over so that is stands on rear end will need supporting so that its held on brg plate but shafts hang without anything touching them, you can remove main case interlock retainer, then knock main case off brg plate you can then see and get to whole of box,,gears are from back forward 5th ,reverse,1st,2nd,3rd,cp /input shaft

Hello James,
Well i had go this morning and i now got gears,,,,,,,,,,,, not sure what it was but i had the 10 bolts out off the casing and slackened the "other arf " of the gear lever,,, gave the casing a tap to split them and there wasa click at the same instant i saw the other arf jump, and yep i got all 6 gears, not sure ive locked the "other arf " in the right place but its working, reverse seems a bit of a struggle to get but that maybe cos its on end on blocks of wood so not easy the put pressure on the stick,,,,,, but im very hopeful.
Thank you for all your help, time and puttng up with me.,,,. thank you i owe ya a big one

Will do mate, Just been on to Craddocks for new adjusters and bearing pads,,, they are telling me i have to buy a new remote at £650..... surely they are having a laugh, any thoughts on the matter

Hello mate,,,,, i had a blonde moment and refaced them on the lathe and trued the holes with a reamer,,,,,,,,,, working fine now,,,, the bareing pads i turned up from drill shanks then oil hardened,,,, fitted a treat and working well, not sure how long for but will get me mobile again to chase the bits i need,,,,,,, oh and all 6cogs now slipping in and out like a ferret up a drain pipe, well chuffed at the mo:D

lol your so right ,,,, all this is taking my back to my SII days lol big hammer and a lump of wood,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, so much for progress
