Apologies if this has been discussed previously. I’ve replaced my park brake shoes recently due to leaking seal. Crazy thought but I may have rebuilt them incorrectly because I’ve adjusted the 17mm adjuster to max adjustment. I was expecting to adjust till no rotation then back off. I’m just getting 3 clicks on handbrake lever. It will not adjust further. So I’ve either done something wrong or the drum is worn ? Anyone has experienced this before.

Could be that an expander piston or a piston in the adjuster is fitted 180 degrees out, [ easy to do ] did you clean them? Or one of the lower ones fell out unnoticed when you replace shoes. The pressure from the shoe springs is what keeps them in place. A blob of grease can hold them in when fitting shoes or a bit thread tied around the unit.

You need more slack than 3 clicks will give you, to tight will mean the shoes will hang on very slightly and you will get clunky dear changes, well more clunky than normal!
So long as there is reserve travel with the h/brake applied it is okay.

He says he has turned the adjuster to max adjustment but is that all the way in or all the way out? I may well have the wrong end of the stick.

This is what the shoes and adjuster looks like. Even with the drum fitted the 17 mm adjuster is screwed fully in. So I don’t even have to back it off.

Is there some sort of wedge between them two square bits to push the shoes out?

Thanks for your replies. background is this is second set of shoes as rear transmission seal leaked again. Same issue with two sets of new shoes. Photos are pre removal before last change. Same set up on current rebuild. I’m sure I can remember the original ones (3 sets back) you could adjust and back off. Happy that I can get the brake to bite. Just really curious as to why I’m on full adjustment. ? Wondering if I left a part out. The photo I’ve posted I think I’ve rebuilt correct. Can you get thinner shoes with less material ? Cheers for your replies. Owning a landy stops me getting bored.

Thinner shoes is a no. As well as making sure new seal goes in square check the flange lands are smooth, if not replace or fix with speedy sleave.
Your assembly looks correct.

Google speedi sleeve, very good and not expensive.

If available you would need thicker linings, not thinner ones.

If you look at your pic of the adjuster, the right hand one in the pic looks to be further out than the left one?

No need for new shoes everytime as a trip in the dishwasher will do the job.

Like the idea of speedi sleeve. The replacement is in square. Maybe if it leaks again I’ll look at the speedi sleeve or flange. I probably didn’t write it correctly ref the shoe thickness, I was thinking maybe there was different shoe thickness and I had got thinner ones. Grasping at straws as I’m sure they are all made to a standard. When I get time I will remove the drum and take a look. Gota be something stupid I’ve done. I’ll check out adjusters.
thanks for you replies and if I find anything I will repost.
