A decent powered winch is out of my reach atm, so i'm looking for any tips or experience with manual winch's or pullers.

Been looking around at a few ideas, here's a few i've found:

1600kg Wire Rope Pulling Hoist

2000lb hand winch

With a manual winch i have to be at the front of the vehicle to use it, if i'm relying on another person to engage the motor to get traction, i'm not in the best position to do so :p.

done a search, but nowt much turned up, any tips or experience welcome :D

I've used the big Tirfor and Trewhella winches in the past and I've now got my own medium sized Tirfor.

They're very flexible - you can pull from any direction (a ground anchor is useful) and, with a Tirfor, you can also lift.

They can be bloody hard work though :(

.

With the set up, i assume the winch has got to be mounted on the vehicle and operated from there?

With a pulley you can have it midway between anchor and vehicle?

The tirfor looks a good deal, not worried about using anything manually.

It's flexible -

You can use it at the vehicle end or at the anchor end, or if your Tirfor rope isn't long enough to reach the casualty, you can run out a static wire (or strop) to an anchor and use the Tirfor from mid-way between the anchor and casualty.

I've already mentioned that the Tirfor has a SWL rating for lifting, another trick it has is that it can winch out as well as in.

My recommendation - BUY A TIRFOR

tirfor all the way m8, beware of cheaper versions as most are crappy chinese imports that you will struggle to get spares for when they go tits up the second time you use em:rolleyes:

Awesome that's what I wanted to know, a 1600lbs should be sufficient for the landy, ie like the situation I was in the other day. What's the minimum strength you reckon for a 90?

tirfor is good, but does do that one job, why not a hi-lift with the recovery equipment that is specific to it. It will work out cheaper than a tirfor and be more flexible in the "field". I have a 9500llb elec winch on the front and have a 3,500kg Tirfor for other extraction work - but the tirfor has 22mm wire and is a handfull to handle, also have hi-lift with the recovery chains and use this the most.

I see your point, other items will be collected and carried, farm jack for one, perhaps 2 of those ramps for slidy situations ( name escapes me, on phone atm ), a shovel and a few hand tools ( i carry a lump hammer, straps, spanners, sockets, foot pump, rope all the time anyway ).

The list of gear, i expect, could be pretty endless and with experience comes knowledge in the field, i'm the kind of person who will try and solve it myself with gear i have rather than call on others.
