Old ones had a thing on the hub you twisted to make it freewheel unless my memory is mixing something up.

Red and yellow lever in the cab for low and 4W drive.

Had that on the h reg hilux. Remember distinctively having to dig front wheels out and try turning little red wheel in freezing cold.

I think that only applied to a limited period of production from memory.

Freewheel hubs were generally an aftermarket fitment.
Yellow plunger for 4wd high range, red lever to select 4wd low range.

What about pto?

Having driven my p38 when I had it for a few miles without the front prop on I can tell you it just dont go round corners the same thats for sure, bloody glad to get it replaced and the handling back.

Yes, early ones had PTO. Some also had a hand throttle. A friend had one.

Essex Fire Service had a few with PTO driving a pump mounted on the rear cross member.

My dad had an ex fire bobbies swb late series 2a. With a pto driven drum winch on the front. I miss my old tratter...

My 90 had the hole for a pto in the bumper but no shafts. Never thought of using winch on one! Does sound dangerous though

have a series 2 with a pump hanging off the front bumper like having a big pendulum attached to it

I have good chain in my boot and a nice smile so always get ‘free breakdown recovery’
Well so far....

Last time I got towed by some couple in a black hilux. Got few hundred yards down the road and I remembered I hadn’t pulled the fuse for the Tbox
So I put it in gear and dropped the clutch
Face on them...nearly yanked back half of their vehicle off
Did bump start it though and transmission survived to this day.
