I would imagine it would be a bit off a nightmare with all the electronics that are all inter linked but anything is possible just depends how much time and money you throw at it.

Apart from anything else, one would have to think 'why?' Seems a backwards step.

Normally if the box is rebuilt properly using a sonnex valve block they last

Manual box would be more fun, faster and more frugal. And presumably you’d also pick one that is strong enough to not grenade itself. Really doesn’t take a genius level intellect to think of a few reasons.....

As for doing it. Probably a fair chunk of R&D required. But seeing as an L322 is pretty much a BMW X5 in a different dress. And they did offer the X5 with a manual with some of the engines. Then it may be easier than first glance would suggest.

One advantage of it I suppose is your not going to be worried about the if and when the transmission fail safe light would come on!! Mine went through a fade not long ago from flickering on and off on the TD6 but it’s stopped popping up now but gearbox seems slightly jerky between reverse and drive. Not sure if a service would cure that or not

    The expense of doing it..

Might aswell get a more "modern" L322 with the proper 6spd auto..

I've had the gearbox go. It was repaired. Another issue came up at same time, eventually found and fixed. Why worry about when something is going to happen. If it happens it happens, if it doesn't , it doesn't.
Put in a manual, and all the issues that will come with that, you'll just be waiting for another fault to pop up.
I've never understood the human desire to worry about things that are not, and may not happen. There are enough things to worry about that are happening without adding to them.

Manual still seems an odd idea.

It seems an extreme response to the OP having rebuilt a couple of them.

While a relatively weak unit, you shouldn't be rebuilding them very often.

A good rebuild should last 100k minimum.

unless something is being done wrong ;)

I never entertained a P38 til I found mine because I thought they were all autos.
Given the R380 is a solid bit of kit is less worry, but still plenty to go wrong with it - they go without warning so I’m told

Possibly, could be your sprag clutch on way out, oil change may prolong it a bit

at the moment its just a 3 ton brick, going manual doesn't look difficult at moment just figgering how to fit a clutch pedal in the small gap

The extra kit, custom adaptor plates etc.

In my mind on an L322 it isn't worth doing, not sure its even possible.

The footwell on an L322 is cramped at best not sure how it would be with a 3rd pedal.
