is the Mantec really that much of a better product to justify the additional cost?

Nope.

I took a mantec flat type snorkel of my TD5 and put the mushroom type on. Your paying for the name.

this is what i bought.

Land Rover Defender 300 TDi TD5 or Puma Snorkel Kit | eBay

Good quality, fits well. The gasket is a shoddy bit of foam but you will need to subsidise any snorkel with silicon, so it matters not.

Hope that helps

Much appreciated BGB, with the free delivery, the eBay one saves me a further £15 on top of the £100 I save by not going for the Mantec version. Thats £115 towards a steering guard.............Happy days:D

Paddocks do a very solid guard for around £40.I've had mine balancing on it no problem.

PM609 | Defender Steering Guard - Galvanised Steel RHD

Mine is the same but with eyes. I think that's £42.

Well I ordered my snorkel from eBay on Wednesday and it arrived yesterday, super fast delivery which when considering it was free postage was bloody good service. I have also ordered a breather kit (eBay), Alloy Steering guard & light guards (Rebel4X4). I'm hoping to get it all fitted prior to the Salisbury trip in march, just need to buy a spanner and a clue, cos I don't have either ;)

Safari is the best looking snorkel they do and not much more than a cheap mushroom top one, I have just ordered the foam sock that goes over it as I have no air box :-0 (ram air lol). So will see how that goes??
