After a particularly wet mountain biking trip to Exmoor this New Year and having had to ford a good many waist deep rivers it got my thinking that a raised air intake might be helpful just to avoid the precarious lapping of water at the intakes. Done a whole load of searches and I've seen loads of threads on various forums asking about Freelander 2 snorkels / raised air intakes with no fruit to bare.

FEAR NOT!!!

I thought as a responsible although somewhat estranged member of this tremendous forum I should share my delightful findings.

Commence jeering and general laughing about Freelanders making it anywhere outside SW6...
 
A concrete slab in each footwell will help stop your FL2 from drifting off downstream. It might be a good idea to drill a few holes in the cabin floor as well to let the water drain out, as unlike a tratter there won’t be any rust holes.

That's part of the cunning design of the defender, the doors leak to allow water drainage.
And salmon migration.

Certain areas were cut out, straightened up, reduced or whatever needed to be done. Then just lots of filling and sanding using carbon fibre filler to add strength, followed by several layers of high build primer and finally a few coats of satin black.
It took a while as I found that when one part was adjusted to be flatter or straighter, it highlighted another area that wasn't flat or straight , or was just odd looking. For instance, the snorkel now matches the bonnet shut line rear angle. Whereas it's angle in the original is too vertical and intersects the shape of the bonnet.. The angle in front of the dummy intake is different and too clumsy. Again, this was straightened and tidied up so the angle matches .
This was all done for my own personal taste.

Yeah thanks for that did see muddy mods just don't like the idea of cutting into the wing :confused:
Sorry for the late reply. I deleted the guy's details a good while ago as I had no intention of contacting him again. To be totally honest, what you get from him isn't the best. It's made of fibreglass and has various fit issues.The elbows and "vacuum cleaner" pipe just don't seem to fit at all. As you can see, I heavily modified mine. It's been bonded to the A pillar with Tigerseal, too as the double sided tape (at least on mine) wasn't in the correct place to hold it on the A-pillar. Plus I didn't trust it being held with just body tape ! The mesh at the top of the intake is very flimsy and buckled easily when handled and I couldn't get it flat again, hence finding and grafting on the top piece. Add to all this, the cost of the item plus shipping from Brazil.
No, sorry. It's far too expensive for what it is, especially considering all the adjustments I made to it.
