Hello

Can anyone tell me what the Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) of a 300 tdi defender 90 is? and the MAM of a sankey trailer both the one with a tailgate which is wider and the one without?

Many thanks

think its 2400kg on standard springs. 2500kg on HD's.

The sanky is around 500kg with a payload of 750kg. I dont know if your youngf or old, but check what the max train weight is you can tow. it will be around 3-3.5ton.

think the 90 train weight is 3.5ton too.

how about google?

Thanks for that, that was the reason for my query I think my combination will be a little over what I am allowed. I need to find where to do my test in the Huddersfield Area now (or as close as possible)

It works out somthing Like 9Kgs over but you could get your trailer de rated by this ammount and re stamped Jai

Isn't it somthing to do with the council weigh bridge or DVLA? May be worth giving the DVLA a ring and they may send you to a HGV testing center or somewhere that can help you. Jai

Any trailer place will mke you a new plate with a reduced weight on it. It's only if you want to increase the MAX Weight that it has to be tested.

The rules on towing..

GTW = Gross Train Weight and is often called MAM.
MAM = Maximum admissible Mass and is the combined, maximum weight of a fully loaded vehicle and the trailer and the trailers load.

A 90/110 Discovery & RR can tow a trailer with MAM of 3.5tonnes on overrun brakes and 4 tonnes if the trailer is fitted with close coupled brakes (Hydraulic or Air brakes)

The maximum speed for towing a trailer in the UK is 60mph on Motorways and dual Carriageways and 50mph on Single lane roads. 30mph in built-up areas. (unless sign indicate otherwise)

Older licences that carry granddad rights allow the holder to drive upto a GTW of 8.25tonnes so 7.5tonne truck & 750kg trailer. or 4.75tonne truck & 3.5tonne trailer.

The new B+E requirement. for which you have to take a test if you want to tow a trailer heavier than 750kg or where the MAM would exceed 3.5tonnes, or where the MAM of the trailer would be greater than the unladen weight (Kerbweight) of the towing vehicle came in on the 1st January 1997.

These links should help to clarify anything you don't understand in the above thread.

Sankey trailer Specs (Wide Track)

Payload 750kg
Trailer weight 509kg

Approx. Dimensions:

.
External
Tip of Hitch to rear 108"
Width 66"
Height 44"
.
Hitch height 26"
Hitch Ring Dia. Ext 6" Dia. Int. 3.5" Thickness 1¾"

Leaf Springs
6.50 x 16 Tyres
NATO Coupling
Military Lighting plug 12/24v

Kerb weight on a 90 is between 1602kg (3.5 softtop) to 1727kg (2.5D CSW)
Unladen weight is between 1483kg (3.5 Softtop) and 1603kg (2.5D CSW)
Max payload in the vehicle is 798g (3.5 Softtop) and 673kg (2.5D CSW)

GVW or MAM is 2400kg on std shocks and 2550 on HD shocks. Now this is important be cause having HD Suspension will reduce the mam of the trailer to 950Kg. On STD suspension the MAM of the trailer will be 1100kg. If driving on a juvenile licence. If you have Granddad rights then the trailer weights don't matter because you can tow a trailer with a MAM of 3500kg.
