MALTA

just returned from a city break in Malta, there must be more Defenders/90/110 there than in Cumbria. Everyone was immaculate but td5 models and older. Does anyone know if Land Rover supplied them with old stock as it's hard to believe that they had all been renovated ! Will try and post a picture off my phone

I reckon it's because it's a small place, fine climate and no muddy off roading.

Possibly, but other vehicles were in a poorer state with it being so small and close to sea!

Fook me coffeelandy, I was on holiday and walking about. I would have looked like a rite tosser at the airport waiting for the snap on tool box ont carousel! Lol

I can see you are a master of disguise! The chassis visible was ok to be fair - and when I say I seen loads I definitely mean loads. Brilliant really, wife played hell - but at least it gets us talking!

I go to Malta as i have a financial interest there, so always look for Land Rovers and the condition of the vehicles that they seem to get away with.
Then there's the Sunday Ferrari club, the sound of a convoy of 6 or so of them through the streets is, for me, worth hearing.

I've been in Malta a few times and have also noticed a lot of well sorted defenders. These two were in sliema and I also watched a good bit of drag racing from the lights - I watched a Ferrari v an Audi RS8 and two minutes later they both came back the other way even though there were always police cars about.

I lived in Malta for over ten years. Its only in recent years that they got rid of the old buses. They would have been in Museums anywhere else in the world. The climate is kind to motors out there and they took pride in there cars polishing them each weekend. To my mind a Defender is an ideal vehicle out there. The island is 8 miles wide and 19 miles long at the widest points. There is no muddy or boggy places.The only place they can off road them is on rocky beaches. I have a couple of cousins out there. They imported there Defenders onto the island. I haven't been out there for about ten years, the roads before then were terrible, bumpy and pot holes everywhere. They must have improved somewhat otherwise the Ferrari's would need new shocks every time they went out. Defenders became fashionable out there, most were imported.

I've only been to Malta once, but if I remember correctly Land Rovers became popular there in the 60s when they got independence from the UK and many of the military ones were disposed of.

I don't think that was the case wattfield, but I am ready to be corrected. When the British pulled out of Malta they took all there Land Rovers and Champs. The British forces were using petrol vehicles which had heavy fuel consumption. It wasn't until diesel became popular in Defenders that they started to become a fashionable item. From what I can recall it was around the 1990's that Discoveries became popular then there was a swing towards Defenders. The Maltese used to dress there vehicles up a bit in the 60's and was finished off with a picture of Elvis Presley, next to either a statue or picture of Jesus. Before Elvis it was Mario Lanza.

There were a good number of 50's American cars there as well some years ago and the Malta highway code was the smallest book in the world.

I'm Maltese so I can give you some insight. First of all, any utitility Land Rovers you see are ex-UK imports. As some of you have rightly pointed out, our climate is pretty kind however we take rustproofing seriously. There are a few companies that specialise in the rebuilding of Land Rovers prior to resale and they build them to a very, very high standard. Anything that can be galvanised, will be and no expense is spared. We just love our landies.

Never been to Malta but we did see a Disco 5 in Cuba last year, no pic tho but did manage to get this little beauty for all the Stephen King fans, shame it's not red!

Oh yes the only 58 Plymouth Fury i saw, loads of Chevy's and the like. JULIA is mighty fine and she must be a beast to tame!

And this must be Julia's sister that I saw in Valletta a few years ago
