If the filter is blocked this will result in pressurisation in the crankcase, removing the dipstick with the engine running should prove if this is the case as the oil will blow out of the diptube. Fitting the BMW replacement will solve any future filter blockages.

Cool happy then, u say fitting the BMW one will solve any future blockages, if I have the BMW engine does this mean it already has one?

Yes it will have one fitted but the chances are it has turned into a piece of coal.....
BMW supply a modified crankcase breather that helps the crankcase breath more easily without blocking up as quickly as the original factory fit breather. Hope this helps

Also, a quick one about the air filter, what is that fitted cover over the filter itself? Does it need to b there? I only ask coz it is grafted, n I think washing it in any way will distort its shape.

What fitted cover?

Do you mean the foam sleeve thing that some filter brands have as an extra bit to keep the wasps and flies out of the filter itself?

I wouldn't re-use that bit, if your new one doesn't have it.

Singvogel.

That's cool so it will do no harm taking it off then? I think it might improve the fuel economy coz like I said its grafted and my b struggling to breath

( ok .. answered before i got this typed out .. posting anywayz :) .. )

that synthetic-wool type fibre thingy ??? like loft insulation material sort-of ?

Does it need to b there?
no idea .. but am assuming it's there as a barrier to bigger objects that Might get thru
the intake tubing .. leaves and such .. so nothing punctures the underlying paper filter ..
and it Might have the ability to soak some oil .. without getting totaly clogged up ..
so preventing oil etc getting to the paper filter bit underneath ..

that's my theory anyway

I only ask coz it is grafted, n I think washing it in any way will distort its shape
i washed mine in gently detergent .. let is soak a bit .. rewashed then rinsed ..
seemed to keep it's shape ok .. and a breath-thru test confirmed it still was usable ..
methinks :)

can't confirm absolutely 'cause i installed a K&N when i last changed it ..

as for the crankcase breather .. here's a thread with all the info to aquire the bmw device

Hd3 cheers that has helped alot. :D

BMW modified breather cost app £24 from BMW dealer not Land Rover dealer as they don't stock them. You should only need the insert and not the full breather which cost closer to £50, BMW dealers will almost certainly know what you're talking about but reading hd 3s link will give you the part number if they don't.
