Lumpy start up and white smoke

Hi, my replacement egr mod arrived today, wish I bought this one first . simples to fit :). only issue was noise when turned engine off , which I believe is common after reading threads ( duck noise , Fart ) also changed the turbo vent filter. got new fuel pump to fit also but will wait a couple of days to see if any improvements on hill starting, but so far it has been ok. Also may have side steps to fit if my Wife can make her mind up? but looks like she is going for the Suburban side steps from Direct 4x4, anyone else have these or maybe recommend others?

Hi, Its been a while since I last posted and just thought I would give an update on my td4. Since I have done all the work mentioned in the previous posts ,ie - full service and change crankcase breather and egr blank and using injector cleaner on fill ups with quality diesel , the td4 is running like a dream with plenty of power and no stuttering. Lets hope it stays like this ? thanks to all who helped, regards.

That's often all it takes. My current TD4 SE auto was the same. A bit of TLC and it's running like a dream.

car wouldn't go over 2.5 rpm plus engine light on, test said low fuel pressure so replaced all fuel parts to rectify this and it's still doing it, garage is now saying it's the injectors! Once car has started, (starts no problem) after a few minutes the engine light goes out and the car runs like a dream... It's been very confusing.

Doesn't sound like injectors to me. Has anyone checked the live data?

A faulty injector will show on start-up. You will get a lumpy tick over for around 30 seconds until the dying injector is warmed up. It won't stop an engine going over 2500rpm.
That's probably a fault in the high pressure fuel pump or low pressure one, or your map sensor is dead.

Hi mike, both fuel pumps have been changed, I don't remember the garage mentioning a map sensor. I don't get a lumpy start to tick over, it just refuses to go over the 2.5rmp for around 2min

That does sound like a fueling issue.
But the map sensor is worth cleaning just to take it out if the equation.
Open the bonnet, as you look at the engine it's on the left hand side of the block just under the manifold. You can get it off without removing the manifold, but it's easier if you do. It's a small black block around an inch in length held on with an 8mm bolt iirc. Give it a blast with carb/brake cleaner, but don't push anything into the tiny hole other than cleaner.
If this rectifies the issue, you will need to replace it with a new one soon.

Other members are better with fueling issues than me.

If the codes are showing low fuel pressure. It's not the injectors at fault. Has the HPFP regulator O ring been replaced? That would be my first change. Even is it's ok now, they can go suddenly and stop it starting.
You need to get the fuel pressure figures. The LP pump pressure should be over 360Kpa at all speeds.
The HP pump pressure needs to be over 25,000Kpa at idle.
The HP pump pressure should be around 60,000Kpa at 2K Rpm.

Hi mike,
Is this the map sensor?

Hi mike, cleaned and didn't make any difference also on start up this morning, it was lumpy but cleared very quickly, got 10 miles down the road and car when into limp mode and so crawled home... At my wits end with it! Is there anyway to check injectors without taking them out and sourcing the one with a problem? My mechanic is still saying it's the injectors but doesn't know which one and is advising to get all 4 replaced. I've already spent in excess of £600 and to spend another large amount without 100% surety it will be cured I'm finding hard..
Kind regards Annemarie
