Guys

Yesterday I changed the ATF and strainer on my '99 4.6l. The old oil was a good colour. Today I went for a run and I noticied that some of the gear changes are little lumpy. Nothing serious but just not as smooth as it was before I changed the oil.
The only thing I noticed during the chnage was how RAVE described the final fill procedure. It says to continue to add ATF with the engine idling until a thread of ATF runs out the filler hole. What I got was foam and not a thread. Is this normal or do I need to add more ATF?

more its mixing air into oil usually through low level ,must be done with eng running box in neutral run through gears once to fill cutch pistons etc

So I checked the atf level this morning with the engine cold and idling in P. When i removed the fill plug the atf was spurting out - certainly not the "thread" expected in RAVE. The atf is full of air bubbles which i did not expect. Gear changes still lumpy especially going into 4th. Is it possible that the new O ring i put on the lift pipe to the the strainer is not sealing correctly? Also is it easy to reconect a proper dipstick to make a simple measurement of the actual amount of atf in the box?

if its overfull i would be looking at other source of air as you said one oring on filter to block one one pick up pipe to filter

Hi did you check the sealing o ring is located on the filter ok? What colour was the oil that came out? If very dirty the new oil might have disturbed some debris in the valve block. You can buy a product from ashcroft transmissions called lube guard which helps with rough changes. It worked fror my discovery auto box.

Thanks James i think you have nailed it. I only spotted the o ring on the pick up pipe. Will pull it off and add the second o ring for the block. I hope driving it like this hasnt done any lasting harm.

Just to close out this thread. Took the strainer off and sure enough I hadn't spotted the O ring between the strainer and the block. New one fitted and now she changes as smooth as you could ask.

Thanks for the help guys.
