I am looking at swapping my 3.9 v8 auto into a manual using the LT85 gearbox. Is there any other gearbox that will fit? I heard the R380 fits but is there a difference between the 300tdi r380 and v8 r380?

Has any1 got a manual box for a v8 for sale?

r380 defender from memory is different input shaft and bell housing.

The short stick lt77 would need box stripping to convert to long stick

And would need a way short bell housing/input shaft. LT85 is the way to go OR get a series converter ring for a V8 and run an LT77 but its probably the weakest Gbox to have.
Why swap from Auto?

So R380 out of the window! What would the vehicle be to use the lt77 or is it too much hassle?
Is the best bet the LT85 for a straight fit?

Having a few problems with the auto like mounting the leaver nicely and sometimes stalls when I select a gear??
Would rather the old fashioned manual as it's simple and easy.

any 4cyl lt77 will do better to get 200tdi circa 1992 original one as they are slightly better internals then fit the V8 conversion plate.

Personally I would fit an LT85 and be done with it. Fit it as factory and fit the engine as factory fitted. If it was for offroad/comp mota an old LT95 4 speed box would be my first choice bullet proof even when absolutly fecked but blkoody heavy and only 4 speed.

lt85 0r r380 are same size as lt85,length wise and would fit as direct replacement with there appropiate mounts , there are 2 typers of lt85 20c is lr h/d version with oil pump internal and 22c santana std version no oil pump ,but gears are exactly the same apart from ludrication holes, the high low lever housing needs changing as lt 85 has different linkage ,r380 box would fit just as well and 300 tdi can be converted with input shaft and bell housing ,both of which i have kicking about as most are converted other way,def v8 lt77 would also fit the same and are better like r380 with oil cooler on v8s both boxes should have provision for this

I like the sound of the R380 as it seems to be a strong box. How much do u want for the box and bell housing and input shaft. Pm me

i got a lt85 gearbox and t box for sale, complete drop in lump but its untested. £250 the lot

i recon boxes so wouldnt want to give r380 away but i have bell housings and input shafts for conversion of 300 tdi left over, would even convert it for you but would cost £50 for carriage both ways (£25 each way)

Hi all, looking for some help here and not sure which way to go. I don't have garage facilities so will have to use a garage for the work. Here goes. I have a Defender 90 with a P38 4.6V8 mated to an LT85. The LT85 is making nasty rumbly noises especially on overrun or deceleration.
So do I...
1. Get it rebuilt, but its still a slow stiff long throw gearbox. Ashcroft are out of stock of reconned LT85s
2. Swap for an R380 from Ashcroft. The do a standard and short bellhousing versions, not sure which I need.

If I do the R380 swap will the box or engine need new mounts, and new driveshafts due to the boxes being different lengths. I've read the R380 is 30mm longer than an LT85.
Oh, and input shaft lengths, I know nothing about this aspect!

All help greatly appreciated
