i read in LRO this month that the LT77 gearbox should be filled with ATF and not gear oil, can anyone else confirm this, it says you will have sticky gear changes if you use oil

I thought ATF was Automatic Transmission Fluid, hense for automatics.....
But then LRO has a bit more experiance than me lol

I put in EVO 1 from Difflock.com in the LT77 gearbox of my wife's Tdi200 and it has worked wonders !!!

It's a fully synth oil, atf type, and seems to have reinvigorated the 'box - smoother changes, quieter running etc.

Not cheap at about £12 per litre but I reckon it's worth it.

Cheers
Dave

does the '93 200tdi manual disco have the LT77 ??

my gear changes are sometimes quite difficult, speshly wen cold. using gear oil so wil change to atf soon

thanks for the replies, i will have to get it changed soon, i'll try the atf before i spend lots of money on the difflock stuff, i will never understand how one oil/fluid can make such a difference from another

different machining tolerances need different viscosity's and additives to keep apart and protect the facing metals

the smaller the gap the thiner the lubricant needs to be to squeeze in between the gaps

synchromesh's are also very particular when it comes to oil and it's viscosity and also how slippery it is as the synchro needs a certain amount of friction to work

Sorry to dig this up how much oil do i need to fill mi transfer box and gearbox??? :suspicious: :confused2:

And shold i use atf?? :suspicious::rolleyes:

sound like a fookin newbie:doh:

Re the quantities, iirc, the tranny box is 2.3ltrs and the gearbox is 2.8ltrs.

Tranny box needs EP80-90, gearbox used to have Dexron11 or 111, but for reccomendation now I believe is for MTF(Manual Trans Fluid)94.

Hope that helps

cheers dave, so do i put in Dexron11 or 111 (atf) or the MTF(Manual Trans Fluid)94.

I know where i can get the atf

Well that rather depends - if you have a good source of ATF at a ahhemm, good price, then I would go with that. After all, that's what the designers had in mind.

However, if there's no fiscal advantage then MTF94 is the way to go.

Good hunting

Dave
